How starting the Day with Positive thoughts can alter the outcome

How starting the Day with Positive Thoughts can alter the outcome

Does how we start each day affect our mood? is it true that how starting the Day with Positive thoughts can alter the outcome.

When we sit down to have a quite moment or seek time for ourselves, are we really having that, much sought after ‘relaxing, de-stressing’ ‘Me-time’, or do we simply spend the time talking to ourselves?

Relaxing 1

If we start the day by talking to ourselves, so what?

Self Talk 2

We all have times during the day (or night), when we have very deep and maybe not so meaningful conversations with ourselves.

Who cares! if we have private internal conversations with ‘Us’, and why does it matter so much!!

Thinking Woman 2

Well it does matter, and here is the reason why…

Research has shown that ‘Positive’ thinking helps to manage stress, and can even improve your health.

Self Talk 4

There is no problem with having an in-depth chat with our inner selves..

Or is there?

Basic RGB

Well the answer to that is ‘YES’ and ‘NO’

‘YES’ there is a problem if – that chat is the all consuming practice of NEGATIVE SELF-TALK….

Self Talk 3

‘NO’ if the internal monologue is POSITIVE…

So, when we want to have a little ‘Natter’ with the person who appears to live inside our head, how do you make sure it’s Positive?

Sleeping Woman 2

How we begin each day affects our mood, energy level and productivity for the rest of the day..

So by starting your day with ‘Positive’ thoughts you can alter the outcome.

Multi Sensorial Sleep Open Air Hotel

HERE – are someways to make sure that you always benefit from your internal ‘Head to Heart’ or Heart to Head’ self-talk.

1.

STOP – constantly hitting that ‘Snooze’ button, which sleep researches have warned is not good for your ‘Heart’… as you are literally  repeatedly inflicting a “cardiovascular assault” on the body and your nervous system.

Clock Big Ben

2.

START- your day by spending the time from when you first wake-up, to when you get out of bed, thinking of or focusing on ‘ONE’ thing that you are looking forward to accomplishing or doing that day.

Sleeping Woman 1489600175vGe

DOING – this simple ( but not always easy task ), helps you avoid the feeling of panic or dread when you suddenly remember – all the things you must not forget to do today, all the things you have to achieve, and last but not least all things that might go wrong.. and all of this negativity will flood your consciousness in just a matter of minutes..

Don’t let it…

3.

ONCE- you have calmed and quietened your mind, slowly open your eyes, gently stretch and get ready to go into your day with a clear and positive outlook.

As – Lao Tzu said “Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habit. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.”

5.

So, from now on when that alarm bell rings in the morning, the only #PAUSE #Button you should reach for is the one to #STOP #NEGATIVE #THOUGHTS, and when you are next having a conversation with yourself, please ‘REMEMBER’ just how ‘NICE’ a ‘PERSON’ you are talking to..

10 Amazing Things About Your Nose

10 Amazing Things About Your Nose, that will change how you think about Yourself!

You may be wondering,
what are these 10 Amazing Things About Your Nose, that will change how you think about Yourself?

Sculpture Thinker Museum Famous Rodin The Thinker

So, you don’t think you are Amazing, you are nothing special, right?

Nose

Wrong, … apart from the fact of course that you are a walking, talking, seeing, hearing smelling, feeling, loving wonder of Nature.

Thinking Woman 2

Now, that in it’s own right is not bad for a start but, …

Woman Nose Rose Fragrance

It gets better!

Here are the 10 Amazing Things About Your Nose:

1.

Did you know that that every 28 days you grow a ‘ A new nose’.

Well, … not technically speaking of course, but you do renew your scent cells so that your olfactory sense is as ‘fit as a fiddle’ and looking forward to the month ahead.

2.

Your sense of smell does not wait around, it is fully functioning and ready to go,

… before your are even born.

3.

We can remember an aroma or smell with more accuracy after a year, than with visual recall.

A study showed that you can remember smells with 65% accuracy after a year, while visual recall is about 50% after only three months.

4.

The human nose can detect one trillion distinct scents.

Yes! you read that correctly – One Trillion …

5.

Our sense of smell is completely unique from our other senses, in that it is the only sense that travels directly to the forebrain without going to the thalamus.

In other words, …

Your brain wants the information received by your nose FAST.

This is a matter of survival.

So,… no time wasting here.

Stop Watch Fast Speed

6.

Our nostrils are ‘Ipsilateral’.

“What does this mean?”, you may ask.

It means, ‘on or affecting the same side of the body.

Each nostril is directed onto a separate side of the brain, where the right nostril corresponds to the right side of the brain and the left nostril corresponding to the left side of the brain.

Where normally the ‘Right’ side of the brain controls the ‘Left’ side of the body and vice versa, well lets just say “your nose it likes to be different”…

7.

Apologies Gentlemen, … but another thing that Women are better at:

Women have a better sense of smell.

One reason for this may be that women have a more developed orbital prefrontal region of the brain.

Or, it may also have evolved to help Women choose the best possible mate.

So you see Gentlemen, it is not all bad news, it insures they pick You, that special someone!

8.

It is estimated that 70% of taste is actually based on olfactory sensations.

Just consider how food loses its flavour when we have a cold.

So the next time you are enjoying a glass of your favourite tipple or a wonderful meal, then you ‘Nose’ who to thank for it.

9.

If you are impressed that Formula One race cars can go from 0-60 in as fast as 1.6 seconds,…

then get in the back seat F1, as the entire procedure of olfactory processing takes a good 200 milliseconds!

10.

Last but by no means least, in this era of ‘Fake News’, your nose is impossible to deceive.

Peter Mombaerts, a Director at the Max Planck Institute of Biophysics, states: “olfaction is the most elementary and fleeting of all senses, an ideal detector of body and environmental chemistry. The sense of smell is almost impossible to mislead”.

So, … the ‘Nose knows, you know’!

10 Amazing Things About Your Nose

Bad Smell Nose 2

Emotions of Others Influence Our Olfactory Sense

A recent study carried out by RUB ( Ruhr-Universität Bochum ) revealed how the Emotions of others influence our olfactory sense, it shows how the  facial expression of others influences how positively or negatively we perceive an odour. It would appear that the face and body language of those around us when smelling a scent will effect how we perceive it.

New Nose 1

The study examined how the processing of visual information effected the olfactory system in humans. Visual stimuli received by the piriform cortex a region of the brain mainly known as part of the primary olfactory cortex, produced predictive templates that helped or facilitate olfactory processing. In other words the region of the brain responsible for detecting odours has kindly provided us with a map  or an olfactory coordinates reference.

Bad Smell 4

The researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study if this region of the olfactory system, is also capable of preprocessing emotional visual information. Differing odours were used in conjunction with primed images of facial expressions, for example happy, sad, disgusted along side scents that were neutral, unpleasant or pleasant.

Their findings are the first to demonstrate that the piriform cortex preprocesses emotional visual information prior to any olfactory stimulation, and that the emotional connotation of this preprocessing is subsequently transferred and integrated into an extended olfactory network for olfactory processing.

Nose

In a nut shell their findings show that when we see someone else make a face because of a bad smell, then we are highly lightly to react in the same way. Our inherited olfactory DNA has taught us that if one of our troop reacts or dislikes an odour, then it may be dangerous or harmful for us, so being forewarned we are forearmed. It could be that the development of the interaction between our olfactory and visual information contributes to an effective perception of scents, that ultimately enhances our chance of survival.

Bad Smell In Nose

Odour identification or recognition is greatly improved by additional verbal and or visual information, for example showing someone a picture of an orange or a lemon when an orange or lemon scent is presented. Seeing an image or reading a scent description also activates the primary olfactory cortex, without the subject ever coming into physical contact with an object.

PAIRFUM citrus lime lemon bergamot grapefruit home fragrance perfume

In summation, the research scientists discovered as expected that the analysis of the whole brain revealed a consistent and specific activation pattern throughout the extended olfactory network. What was also very interesting was the discovery that the observable emotions expressed on the faces of others change the processing of pleasant odours, while unpleasant odours were unaffected.

Nose 6

The results of this study clearly demonstrate that emotional visual information is preprocessed in the human piriform cortex prior to any physical contact or pairing with an odour.

Woman Smile Perfume Nose

This is of specific interest as visual stimuli have not been directly associated with any olfactory stimuli. The behavioural data reveals that valence (relating to or denoting electrons involved in or available for chemical bond formation) perception of odours is shifted towards the emotional connotation of the facial expression.

New Nose 2

The findings from this research throw further light on just how complex and utterly amazing our Olfactory sense is, and how important it is to our well-being. It is also proof of how we as individuals influence others and the world around us.

Microbeads

Manufacturing Ban on Plastic Microbeads

A Manufacturing ban on Plastic Microbeads has come into force in the U.K., this means that the tiny beads that have been used by some manufacturers in their cosmetics and personal care products, and that have been shown as harmful to marine life can no longer be used.

Zirconia Silica Beads 05mm 01

This ban has already been in place in the USA since 2015, and at long last it has come into force in the UK. They can no longer be used in cosmetics and personal care products. It initially bars the manufacture of such products, and a ban on sales will follow later in July.

The huge problem of plastic pollution choking the oceans and destroying marine life and habitats, has been in the forefront of the news for sometime, with the surprising and previously unknown fact that the world’s seas contain five trillion pieces of plastic and debris.

4iQNU

Microbeads play a significant part in this and as campaigners working to clean up our Oceans have pointed out, removing them from our shelves, face scrubs, toothpastes, shower gels, and our lives was an easy way to prevent thousands of tonnes of these pests from washing into our Oceans and Rivers every year. They do not degrade over time and can transport toxic chemicals into marine organisms.

Greenpeace Microbeads Toothpaste

It is not just the use of Microbeads that are polluting our Seas, plastic bottles make-up a third of the plastic litter found in our Oceans, with a million bottles bought every minute around the world, recycling schemes run in other countries have been very successful in reducing the number of plastic bottles that end-up floating in our seas, being ingested by our wildlife and eventually finding it’s way back into the food chain.

Dead Fish On Coast

A 5 pence charge for plastic carrier bags was introduced in 2015, and the results show a reduction of 9 billion fewer bags being used. So when there is ‘a will there is a way’. Microbeads may actually only make up a small proportion of the amount of plastic that ends up in the sea from the UK every year.

However they are entirely unnecessary when there are so many natural alternatives available, from rose-hip seeds to salt, coffee and whole oats. Why use something that is so damaging to the environment and our Seas, when we have to hand natural alternatives.

Images

The ban has been welcomed by industry and campaigners alike, however worries remain that tackling individual issues such as microbeads, plastic bags or bottles is not addressing the overall scale of the problem. Microbeads are only one part of the huge plastic pollution problem we currently face but it is a step in the right direction and everyone is aware that much more needs to be done.

Amazing Women

The name Millicent Fawcett or Dame Millicent Garrett Fawcett born the 11th of June 1847, and died the 5th of August 1929 aged 82, was one of the U.K’s ‘Amazing Women’ a forerunner in the feminist movement she was an intellectual, a political leader, an activist and writer. She was a leading suffragist and was instrumental in securing votes for women in 1918. Her belief was that peaceful protest using non-violent demonstrations and petitions to MPs, would achieve better results than violent confrontations.

The eighth of ten children Millicent came from a very close and happy family in which the children were encouraged to read widely, speak their minds and be physically active. In a time when ‘Women should be seen and not heard’, they were also encouraged to share in the political interests of their father.

Her older sister Elizabeth Garrett Anderson another Amazing Women, faced an almighty uphill struggle to become the first female doctor in the UK, and this fight spurred her on in her campaign for female equality.

She became the president of the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies in 1897, this group joined together with other suffrage groups including Emmeline Pankhurst’s suffragette movement.

In 1918, the Representation of the People act was passed granting voting rights to only some women in the UK, to be allowed to vote you had to be over 30 years old and hold £5 of property ( a small amount by today’s standards, but an insurmountable barrier for some Women of the time) or have a husband who did.

In 1928, voting rights were then extended to all women over 21 in line with men, and Millicent who was 81 years old at that time, watched on in the public gallery in the House of Commons as the bill was passed.

A poll held by BBC Radio 4 saw Millicent Fawcett chosen as the most influential women of the past 100 years.

What Makes You Happy?

What would your answer be, if someone stops you in the street and asks you “What makes you Happy”? Or, what is the meaning of ‘Happiness’, the elusive state that theologians, philosophers and psychologists have been mulling over and researching for ever (or so it seems).

Would it be – the ability to hop from one joy to the next, from one happy moment to the next without a break? Or, is that the definition of exhaustion?

Research has shown that to achieve happiness we must go through times that involve periods of displeasure, annoyance and down right vexation. Other elements in our day to day living effect how we feel, general health, money is important but only to a certain point, as it helps to relieve the strain or worry about housing, food, clothing etc. Our life circumstances, work, marital status, social relationships, can and do influence our sense of well-being or how happy we feel.

Smile Happy Health Everyone Girl

It would appear from reading between the lines of all the research papers, that happiness is a state of well-being that encompasses living a good life, and no we do not mean turning your back garden into a small holding. Unless that is what would really make you ‘Happy’, and the neighbours don’t mind!. It means doing something irrespective of what that ‘Thing’ is, that gives you a sense of meaning and deep satisfaction.

Smile Happy Health Life Girl

The really good news is, that research shows that much of what makes us ‘Happy’ is under our personal control. Small things such as taking a long leisurely soak in the bath, and of course, this is where we would recommend that you use one of the PAIRFUM Organic Washes and lotions (well, we would, wouldn’t we! – because that is what makes us ‘Happy’ – Click here for PAIRFUM Happy)

So from setting yourself a goal to getting involved in an enjoyable, or sometimes not so enjoyable an activity. Socialising, keeping in touch with friends and family, to finding simple ways to teach or remind yourself not to react in a certain way when certain situations arise, and they will every single day. You decide how ‘Happy’ you would like to be today, and remember as odd as it may seem that going through the tough times enables us to feel a deeper sense of contentment or achievement.

Be Happy And Smile

So, you may decide not to turn your back garden into a version of the 1975 TV series in a bid to live the ‘Good Life’ , but the important thing to remember is that we can all ‘Cultivate Happy’.

Maybe today “Happiness is wearing your favourite Perfume, and sharing it with the World” – Huib Maat.

Tell us what makes you happy.

Aroma Magic Coffee Beans Smell Nose Clear

The Fairy Tale of the Perfume Wizard and the Magic Coffee Beans

We would like to share with you ‘The Fairy Tale of the Perfume Wizard and the Magic Coffee Beans’.

Once upon a time in the beautiful land of Perfume, there lived a Perfume Wizard that loved Perfume so much that he cast a spell so that every time you walked into a department store or through the departures lounge of an Airport, the Perfume Nymphs who worked for him would liberally spray you or the space around you in Perfume. Not just one type of Perfume but many, many different types, now for a while this made the Perfume Wizard very happy, but after a while he began to notice that the the people that he wanted to try his Perfumes, were becoming ‘Nose Weary’, and this made him very sad.

Baby Crying Coffee Bean Perfume Wizard

So he decided that he must do something about it, he returned to ‘Perfume Land’ and spent many hours working out a way that he could overcome this problem. As he sat scratching his head and pulling his beard, while drinking a wonderful cup of Coffee that he had just made with freshly ground coffee beans. He came up with the fantastic idea of using ‘Coffee Beans’ to nasal cleanse or to put it another way give us an olfactory reboot, or the fresh impetus to try more Perfumes. Oh! how happy he and everyone else in Perfume Land’ were that they had solved this sniffy problem.

Coffe Bean Smell Candle Perfume Vanilla

However as we said at the beginning of the post this is, The Fairy Tale of the Perfume Wizard and the Magic Coffee Beans. The reason for writing this blog is in answer to the question we are asked time and time again on numerous occasions,  “Does smelling or sniffing Coffee beans when you are trying or sampling perfumes work?”. One of the most persistent myths in the fragrance sales industry is that of the ‘Coffee Bean’. You will have spotted or been offered a container of them at perfume counters through out the World , with the promise that they will re-set your nose or ‘cleanse your nasal palate’ in between trying out different scents.

Roasted Coffee Bean Aroma Perfume Nose

Before you rush to inhale deeply when offered the pot of magic beans, you might like to know that the number of aromatic compounds found in coffee is believed to be between 800 and 1000, and as analytical methods become more precise, no doubt even more will be uncovered. So if you thought you were experiencing so called ‘nasal fatigue’ due to the fact that you were trying so many different aromas, how does adding a further 800 to 1000 to the mix help?

Coffee Beans Roasted Nose Smell Aroma

Another very interesting fact and one that we have written about before, is that our sense of smell is so much more powerful than you could ever imagine, research done by the Rockefeller University showed that your nose can detect ‘One trillion distinct scents‘. Click here for further details regarding this topic.

Women No Nose Perfume

So the fact that your sense of smell and your ability to detect so many different aromas is so well developed , then it is highly unlikely that even though you may have gone on a ‘Smell-a-ton or a sniffathon’ that your nose has become exhausted. However you may well have become psychologically fatigued, and feel as if you can not try a single note more, your nose that wonderful unique sensory organ however is rearing to go, in fact it never technically switches off.

Multi Sensorial Sleep Open Air Hotel

The technical term for what you may be experiencing is ‘Olfactory Habituation’, this is the ability of our olfactory system to take any initially strong and consistent smell and deal with it, by firstly registering and recording it and if it poses no danger then pushing it into the background so that we are aware of the next chemical aroma that comes our way.

Woman Nose Rose Fragrance

Most of us are already aware of this even if we have not thought about it in this way, it is the reason that we think or feel that the perfume we are wearing is not noticeable or does not last. ( There are some perfumes that do not last very long, but that is a story for another day).

So what should you do if you feel overwhelmed or tired of smelling perfumes. Thankfully studies by scientists such as Dr. Alexis Grosofsky of Beloit College’s Department of Psychology, have provided research to prove that coffee beans have no more effect on cleansing your olfactory palate than a breath of air or a lemon slice.

PAIRFUM citrus lime lemon bergamot grapefruit home fragrance perfume

Following the completion of nine trials, where participants smelled three fragrances multiple times, rating odours each time and in between each trial sniffing coffee beans, lemon slices or plain air, the participants were asked to indicated which of the presented fragrances had not been previously smelled. Coffee beans did not yield better performance than lemon slices or air.

So the moral of the story is that although the idea of ‘The Magic Coffee Beans’ is a fantastic marketing success, in truth it is no more or less effective than smelling a slice of lemon or good old fashioned air.

Or another trick that we always recommend and use in the perfume industry is inhale or sniff your own skin unscented if possible, as it is much easier to find when you are in the middle of a wonderful store surrounded by Perfumes, and your local Lemon seller is never around when you need them!!

At PAIRFUM London we can honestly say that we never tire of Perfumes or smelling them, and if you would like to try them then, please click here to find out more.

Essential Oils 1

What are Essential Oils?

If you look up the word ‘Essential’ in a dictionary, you will comer across terms or meanings such as absolutely necessary, extremely important, crucial, vital, indispensable. So when we hear someone refer to essential oils, does this mean that we can not live or survive without them, what are essential oils and what are they used for?

Essential Oils 5

The general term ‘essential’ is derived from the Latin expression ‘essentia’ or ‘quinta essentia’, which ancient alchemists regarded as the inherent, and most vital element of all natural substances (constituting the essence of something). When referring to essential oils the word essential refers to the essence of the plant, the odorants, the aromas, the volatives , in other words the molecules that you detect as a scent.

Essential Oils 6

Essential oils are a natural oil that is typically obtained by distillation, and retains the characteristic odour of the plant or the source from which it was extracted. They are extracted from a single botanical source with citrus oils being extracted by expression. In certain instances other methods are necessary to extract the aroma / oils, as some flowers or raw materials are either too delicate, or too inert to be steam-distilled and can only yield their aroma through solvent extraction.

Perfumery Mallorca

Absolutes are produced through this method, and one of the earliest methods of extraction was called enfleurage. Due to the process, time and effort it takes to extract the oils, Rose oil, Jasmine absolute, Tuberose absolute and Orris root oil, are some of the most expensive perfume ingredients in the World.

Pairfum Home Fragrance Rose Fragranced Candle James Bold

For thousands of years mankind have been using essential oils for therapeutic purposes, and aromatherapy is one area where essential oils are employed extensively, where the essential oils are used to treat certain health conditions, and to help alleviate stress.

The word aromatherapy derives its name from the word aroma, which means fragrance and therapy which means treatment. The therapy is used to treat the body as a whole, not just the physical body but the mind and spirit also. Numerous studies have been carried out to test the efficacy of this therapy on the human brain, peoples emotions and the possible role it plays in altering moods, alertness, and mental stress.

Bubble Bath Candle Sulfate Wash Romantic

While the medical and alternative world of medicine, have very varying views on the virtue of using essential oils to treat physical or mental aliments. The one aspect that everyone can agree upon is that your sense of smell is the only sense that is not filtered by the cortex of the brain. All others such as sight, sound, taste and touch are filtered before we can react to them.

Farmacia

Since smell is not filtered, we are unable to consciously control our reaction to it, and as our sense of smell is one of our most primordial senses, and the only sense to send information directly to different parts of the brain, it stands to reason that scent molecules can and do have an impact on your brain or your body’s reactions. If your sense of smell did not play an important role in keeping you safe, then why would it have evolved as the single sensory faculty by which the body perceives an external stimulus directly to the brain.

Woman Smile Perfume Nose

In our day to day living we rely on all our sensory functions, but in humans the olfactory and the gustatory systems are the principal sensory systems, and are responsible for smell and taste respectively. Though most people can rely on vision and hearing, both of these senses can easily be blocked by closing your eyes or plugging your ears. It’s impossible to turn off your sense of smell unless you have worked out an alternative way to breath when you mouth is otherwise occupied. Or you have lost your sense of smell due to an accident or illness.

Dogs Sniff Inappropriate Places Nose

This is nature way of telling us that we need to be keenly aware of the chemical compounds around us. ‘Chemosensation’ our oldest group of senses, that is smell, taste and touch and our earliest form of communication between our brain, bodies and the world around us. When three of our principal, primordial sensory systems that exist to insure that we survive, rely so heavily on the information supplied by volatile compounds ( aromas, perfumes). How can you totally dismiss or disregard the beneficial uses of ‘Essential Oils’ in promoting well-being, or improved physical and mental health.

Smell affects emotion, behaviour, memory and thought, so using aromas, perfumes and differing scent molecules will impact on our sense of well-being. You just have to insure that the perfumes or aromas that you use, are beneficial to the person you are trying to help.

Incredible Facts About Your Sense of smell, people can detect one trillion distinct scents.

While there may be many benefits of using essential oils, it would be totally irresponsible to ignore the potential danger of an essential oil.  These dangers are sometimes relative to the level, or grade of purity of an oil. It may also be related to the toxicity of specific chemical components contained within a specific oil.

While many essential oils are used exclusively for their aroma-therapeutic classifications, these essential oils should never be applied directly to the skin in their undiluted or “neat” form. As some can cause allergic reactions, provoke severe irritation, and over time prove hepatotoxic (damaging or destructive to liver cells). Some essential oils, including many of the citrus peel oils, are photosensitizers, which means they increase the skin’s vulnerability or sensitivity to sunlight.

Essential Oils 7

Practitioners or industrial users of essential oils should always consult the safety data sheets (SDS), that should be provided with each oil, to determine the hazards, handling or specific requirements of each oil. Even certain therapeutic grade oils can pose potential threats to individuals who suffer with epilepsy, or to expectant Mothers.

Essential Oils 4

The use of Essential oils in holistic medicine has come a long way over the last number of years, and the number of research papers being produced by the scientific community in regards to their use and or their effectiveness, bears witness to the more holistic approach to health and well-being that is becoming more accepted and main-stream.

Essential Oil 2

So whether you choose to use essential oils as part of your quest for a more holistic lifestyle, a way of looking at wellness by taking into account mental and social factors, of the whole person rather than just treating the symptoms of a disease. It is of upmost importance that you check the safety and veracity of the oils that you choose, and their relevance to the condition you are dealing with.

The Language of Perfume

When dealing with customers from outside the U.K. we are quite often asked “What Language do you speak, or do you speak another Language”, and our automatic reply here at ‘PAIRFUM London’ is that we speak ‘PERFUME’, it is an amazing, wonderful, sensuous, global vernacular that whether you realise it or not we all speak. So no matter where you live, you are already fluent in The Language of Perfume.

Perfumers Organ Fragrance Oil Accord Create

When you first think of The Language of Perfume, you may automatically think we are referring to the day to day terms used in the perfume industry. Words such as ‘Accord , Chypre, Floralcy, Fougère, Oriental, Musky, Ozonic, Soliflore, Woody’ to name but a few,  we could go on but that is a subject for another time. The Language of Perfume that we are referring to in this article is the instinctive, natural, inherited verbal expression that we use to describe feelings, memories and emotions.

“Through out history we have sought to express ourselves in many different ways, and one of the most beloved forms of expression is the Alchemy of Scent.” – Huib Maat

What are Sulphates or Sulfates ?

Here at Pairfum London we are regularly asked the question “What are Sulphates” and “Why are they bad”?

To answer this question, sulphate ion is a polyatomic anion.

What, you may ask, is a “Polyatomic Anion”?

Well, … anions are atoms or radicals (which are groups of atoms) that have gained electrons, and since they now have more electrons than protons, anions have a negative charge.

So glad we were able to have cleared all of this up for you !!

The next question is, how and why are they used?

Sulphates are used in the production of shampoos, toothpaste, cleansing products, body wash, facial cleansers. The reason they are included in these products is to enable two or more immiscible liquids (liquids that don’t mix – think Oil & Water) to turn into an emulsion.

This is the reason why shampoos or face & body washes that contain sulphates produce a lather (a mass of small bubbles) that gives us the impression of having squeaky clean hands, face, hair and teeth, in a ‘Nut Shell’, they are cleansing agents.

They are derived from sulphur which does occur naturally. However, the sulphates used in most cases are derivatives of the petroleum industry or come from sodium lauryl sulfate which comes primarily from coconut oil. Hundreds of sulphates are produced using these sources, but the ones you will see most often are ‘sodium laureth’ and ‘sodium lauryl’.

Sulphates or Sulfates have in recent years received a lot of attention, as people have been voicing their concerns over the use of sulphates in products. These chemicals have been linked to cancer though nothing has been proven yet. Sulphates are also known to dry out your hair and have been widely accused of causing irritation and acerbating eczema.

With these issues currently still under review and with health conscious consumers taking the attitude that it is better to be ‘Safe than Sorry’, some brands are now offering sulphate-free products.

This is why you will see packaging and products stating SLS, SLES and ALS Free. It means, that they do not contain the lather-inducing detergents known as sodium laureth sulphate, sodium lauryl sulphate and ammonium lauryl sulphate.

SLSs are considered to be a ‘low hazard’ according to the EWG (Environmental Working Group), but they have been linked to skin irritation, organ toxicity and environmental damage of specific ecosystems. However, sulfates are considered to be safe in small quantities of concentrations below 1% by the FDA and American College of Toxicology.

Higher concentrations of SLSs intended for discontinuous usage, were found to pose no significant health risk to humans. However, in higher concentrations sulfates did cause cellular damage. With prolonged exposure or at concentrations of 15% or higher harmful effects were recorded in laboratory tests on rats which included skin irritation, depression and laboured breathing.

So when you next purchase a ‘Natural and or Organic Sulphate Free’ product that does not lather as you think it should, the question you should ask yourself is ‘Not’ why it does not lather-up.

Instead, the question you should maybe be asking yourself is why the other products do lather?

For a more enjoyable bathtime, we recommend products without SLS, SLES or ALS.
