Use Essential Oils to build a Sleep Routine

Sleep Spray - Buying Guide - Part 1 of 3

There is nothing in the world quite so frustrating as not being able to sleep.

Sleep is one of the most important (but also sadly overlooked) aspects of our health. It’s while we’re asleep that our bodies do the routine maintenance and repairs that are so essential to good health. It’s while we are asleep that we fight off infections. It’s while we’re asleep that we repair damaged or exhausted muscle tissue. It’s while we’re asleep that our brains recharge and recalibrate and throw out all the extraneous information that they don’t need so that they can better face the challenges of the coming day.

When we’re unable to get the deep, restful sleep that we need, it can be not only irritating but detrimental to our health and quality of life. The trouble is that the fast pace of modern living combined with the ever-present distraction of our ubiquitous electronic devices are rarely conducive to restful sleep.

Nature is the best medicine

Fortunately, the natural world has given us remedies to aid healthy and restful sleep since the dawn of civilisation. If you struggle to nod off at night, you should make essential oils your best friend. Not only can they create a potent pillow spray mist to help you sleep at night, they can also add the perfect atmosphere to the other rooms in your home besides the bedroom. They can make your home office more conducive to concentration and make your living room more restful.

Most people are aware of the potent effects of lavender oil to aid sleep but if the soothing scent of lavender is not your personal preference, there are a range of other options including (but not limited to);

  • Ylang ylang
  • Chamomile
  • Sandalwood
  • Bergamot
  • Sandalwood
  • Cedarwood
  • Marjoram

While any of these essential oils can be a great sleep aid, how they are applied is of paramount importance. Here we’ll discuss how to incorporate sleep sprays that use essential oils into your sleeping routine as well as the pros and cons of making your own.

Results backed by science

Essential oils such as lavender have been helping us to relax and as a sleep therapy aid for centuries. The ancient Romans would use lavender not just to aid sleep but as a linen perfume and a perfume for clothes, to scent their bath and even to wash their hair. In fact, the word lavender comes from the Latin word ‘lavare’ meaning ‘to wash’.

When you use essential oils in a fine airborne spray, in a room diffuser, in a scented soy candle or perfume natural wax candle, applied directly to your pillow or even massaged into the skin they interact with the body in specific ways.

A 2013 study by the American NCBI (National Centre for Biology Information) demonstrated that ambient lavender “improved the mean scores of sleep quality in fifteen healthy students”. It works as a natural anxiolytic (anxiety-reliever) and interacts with the neurotransmitter GABA to help relax the brain and ease the agitation we accumulate throughout a stressful day. Having established the scientifically proven efficacy of lavender and other essential oils, let’s take a look at how a sleep spray for pillow application can be incorporated into your nocturnal habits for restful sleep.

Essential Oils as a Natural Sleep Aid

Sleep Spray - Buying Guide - Part 2

Building a sleep routine

You can’t expect sleep sprays to work immediately which is why it’s advisable to spray some into the bedroom at the start of your sleep routine. This will give you time to imbibe the scent and for it to work its magic on your brain. Avoid caffeine in the evening and if you want the comfort of a warm drink on a cold night opt for a caffeine free herbal tea.

It’s recommended that the bedroom be a no-go zone for electronic devices as the blue light that they emit can suppresses melatonin production and prevent you from being able to nod off. However, reading a book (an actual, paper book) can help your brain to transition from day mode to sleep mode. Ensure that your room is free of clutter and distractions.

If, after a while you’re unable to sleep don’t lie in bed frustrated as this will only exacerbate matters. Get up, go into another room and do something else until you feel sleepy. Feel free to take your sleep therapy spray with you.

Pillow and linen fabric spray application

Some of our customers may like to apply their sleep sprays directly to the pillow. While this may be effective for some, it can also risk staining your bedding if you opt for a cheaper brand or one that has not been formulated correctly.

For this reason we recommend one of the following two:

  1. Pairfum’s Pillow and Sleep or Linen and Fabric Spray – our sprays are formulated not to stain and have been tested extensively. We do not use any ingredients that might potentially colour your fabrics.
  2. Test It – alternatively, we recommend testing the fabric spray you wish to use on a small or hidden area of the sheets or pillows you wish to fragrance. This way, if something does stain, nobody will be able to notice it.
  3. Wardrobe Sachet or Drawer Liners – using either is an indirect way of fragrancing your linens and fabrics. The fragrance will gradually permeate your storage area. The scent will be very subtle and tends not to last as long on your linens when taken out of the wardrobe.
  4. Fabric Conditioner – some are known to use essential oils but unfortunately they do not ‘cling’ to your linens during the wash cycle which leads to a very, very limited amount of them actually scenting your laundry.

A lavender spray developed as a sleep and pillow or linen and fabric spray is a much more convenient solution. It will not only serve as a potent sleep aid but also as a non-staining perfume for clothes, helping you to stay more relaxed throughout the day.

Sleep Spray - Buying Guide - Part 3

Advantages of alcohol based sleep sprays

It’s important to remember that not all pillow sprays in the UK are created equal.

You may find that cheaper sprays on the market, while they may still use essential oils, they might be water based, which makes them less effective. The water droplets from a spray will not be very fine and will disperse the essential oils as finely as an alcohol based spray.

Another downside is that in order to mix essential oils with water, solvents will need to be used and your head will be resting against these solvents that you sprayed onto your pillows. Essential oils dissolve, however, easily in alcohol without any solubilisers or solvents.

Moreover, alcohol is a natural antibacterial whereas water promotes the growth of bacteria which is why all manufacturers using water add preservatives to their formulas. Again, your skin will be sleeping against the preservatives you sprayed on your linens.

Sleep sprays made without water and only with alcohol and fragrance oils create a more potent and longer lasting aroma.

Finally, alcohol dries near-instantly on fabrics,… Nobody wants to go to sleep on a damp pillow!

Can you make your own sleep spray?

Yes, you can!

Since essential oils are so cheap and readily available you may be tempted to make your own sleep spray using a combination of your favourite essential oils and alcohol.

There are many recipes which will allow you to do just that, many of them involve the use of water or witch hazel for a longer shelf-life.

This will result in a less potent effect, the risk of stained linens and fabrics and the aforementioned damp pillows which never lulled anyone to a restful night’s sleep.

If you want to create your own eschew water for vodka or rubbing alcohol. Combine 30ml of this with 20-30 drops of relaxing essential oils of your choice. You may, however, still find that you encounter issues with dampness and / or stains.

To create a scent of your very own, try experimenting with different combinations of our alcohol based sprays to create a fragrance which is truly unique to you.

The main risk and the reason why we advise against making your own is the risk of skin ‘irritation’ and ‘sensitization’.

  1. Many essential oils are known to contain both skin sensitizers and irritants, including such harmless sounding oils like ‘lavender’ or ‘lemon’. Recent research has found that practially all essential oils contain harmful ingredients for a variety of reasons. The knowledge of how to buy ‘clean’ essential oils is an often underrated skill.
  2. How do you know the essential oil you are buying has not been diluted or of a cheaper grade that might not be pure? When you consider that many pure natural oils cost between £100 – 5,000/kg, then it easy to conclude that all of the ‘essential oils’ you can buy are likely to be diluted in order to offer an attractive price.

For a natural nights sleep which will leave you feeling refreshed and invigorated, don’t accept less than the best.
