The Language of Perfume

When dealing with customers from outside the U.K. we are quite often asked “What Language do you speak, or do you speak another Language”, and our automatic reply here at ‘PAIRFUM London’ is that we speak ‘PERFUME’, it is an amazing, wonderful, sensuous, global vernacular that whether you realise it or not we all speak. So no matter where you live, you are already fluent in The Language of Perfume.

When you first think of The Language of Perfume, you may automatically think we are referring to the day to day terms used in the perfume industry. Words such as ‘Accord , Chypre, Floralcy, Fougère, Oriental, Musky, Ozonic, Soliflore, Woody’ to name but a few,  we could go on but that is a subject for another time. The Language of Perfume that we are referring to in this article is the instinctive, natural, inherited verbal expression that we use to describe feelings, memories and emotions.

“Through out history we have sought to express ourselves in many different ways, and one of the most beloved forms of expression is the Alchemy of Scent.” – Huib Maat

Below are a number of quotations from Perfumers or Lovers of Perfume, that have sought to put into words what Perfume means to them, it is in the truest sense ‘The Language of Perfume’.

“I felt something so intense, I could only express it in a perfume.” – Jacques Guerlain

Guerlain Shalimar

“The creation of a perfume is an act of love, whether real or imaginary. I am romantic. I couldn’t imagine living without dreams.” – Nina Ricci

“No elegance is possible without perfume. It is the unseen, unforgettable, ultimate accessory.” Coco Chanel

Coco Mademoiselle Chanel Female

“Fragrance helps to communicate immediately a certain something that is special about a person. Women expect fragrance to match their personality and highlight it. When I think of putting on shoes, a shirt, a tie, it is to express what I am all about – I believe a fragrance should do the same thing; make you feel more yourself.” – Salvatore Ferragamo

Signorina Eleganza Salvatore Ferragamo Female

“Fragrance is the first layer of dressing, a woman’s invisible body suit. Some of my favourite fragrances are exotic incense, mystic woods and sensual spices. Scents that create a lasting impression of serenity and calm. Smell is the primordial sense, more powerful, more primitive, more intimately tied to our memories and emotions than any other. A scent can trigger spiritual, emotional or physical peace and stimulate healing and wellness.” – Donna Karan

DKNY Be Delicious Donna Karan Female

“When Perfume speaks to you, how do you listen?. With your nose, your mind, your heart, your soul? A good perfume makes you sit-up and take ‘note’ with every fibre of your being.” – Huib Maat
