The first valentine written is traditionally credited to Charles, Duke of Orleans, while imprisoned in 1415 in the Tower of London after the Battle of Agincourt. The young Duke reportedly whiled away the hours by writing romantic poems for his wife in France.

The Victorians began the tradition of floriography, or the language of flowers, as a way to communicate feelings that could not be spoken in words. In this context, ‘red roses’ signify romantic love and passion, while yellow roses communicate devotion and friendship.

Over time, we have come to associate the luxurious fragrance of roses with special celebrations such as Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day. Our senses have become emotionally tuned into perceiving roses as the most romantic perfume, whether this is in sensual essential oils, perfume sprays or scented candles.

Valentines Cards are bought for secret sweethearts, spouses, children, parents, teachers and even pets. In terms of the popularity of greetings card posted on an annual basis, Valentines Day Cards come second only to Christmas Cards. Today, a Valentines Card usually goes hand-in-hand with another gift such as chocolates, a bunch of roses or a perfume.
