Solution found for our Oceans Drowning in Plastic!

Good News, a solution has been found for our Oceans Drowning in Plastic.

It is estimated that over 8 million tonne of plastic is dumped into our seas every year.

It is also believed that at this rate by 2050, there will be more plastic in the sea than fish.

Plastic Floating 3

SO!

Unless you fancy having ‘Plastic & Chips’ as a treat from your local eatery. Then something has to be done!

But what?

Fish & Chips 1

Well, it may just be that a student from Reed College in Oregon, called ‘Morgan Vague’, has come up with a possible solution.

Morgan, who is studying biology at Reed, started to look for a solution to one of the World’s most urgent environmental problems:

the Disposal of Plastic Waste.

Currently, around 300 million tonnes of plastic is discarded each year, with only about 10 per cent of it being recycled.

You may be wondering what did Morgan come up with? that could solve this floating menace?

Plastic In Ocean 1

It would appear, that while studying our wonderful friends, the ‘Bacteria’, she discovered breeding bacteria capable of digesting or eating plastic and potentially breaking it down into harmless by-products.

Thank you Mother Nature (yet again), for coming to our rescue and for trying to help save us from ourselves.

Beautiful Ocean 4

While conducting the research for her senior thesis at Reed Ms Morgan a biology major, began searching for microbes adapted to degrade plastic in the soil and water around refineries in her hometown of Houston.

As you do….

What she discovered is amazing:

Morgan uncovered a fat-digesting enzyme potentially capable of breaking down plastic and making it palatable for the bacteria.

Plastic Eating Bacteria 1

Plastic eating Microbes – IS THIS THE ANSWER?

She believes, that if the process was sped up, it could play a very important role in finding a solution to the planet’s plastic problem.

Just before you run off to protect your computers, cars and TVs from this plastic gobbling wonder,

Remember these are naturally occurring bacteria that are out there in the environment.

The team of scientists behind the research are just trying to isolate bacteria and then treat the plastic in a way that bacteria can naturally digest it.

The study is still in it’s infancy and has a long way to go, but at least it is going in the right direction.
