We would like to wish All of our customers, partners, friends and family a very Happy New Year.
May we all treasure the people and times that we have in our lives.
Wishing you the very best of Health, Happiness and Successes in the New Year.
A New Year, Well Composed
The year turns quietly, as years should do, With measured hope and plans half-drawn in ink. What once was bold learns patience; what was known Invites a second, closer look without a blink.
We thank you for the moments shared, For curiosity, discernment, time. For choosing beauty made with care, Not hurried, loud, or out of rhyme.
May this New Year bring clarity of thought, Good humour when things go astray, And pleasures found in details small— Those lasting far beyond the day.
We look ahead with steady hands, Ideas sharpened, standards high. If all goes well, we shall surprise you. If not, at least we did try.
The New Year, in Notes
The New Year opens like a scent, First impressions, bright and brief. A sparkle of intent on top, Before the deeper truths appear beneath.
Citrus resolves to woods and spice, Ambitions soften, find their place. What promised fireworks learns restraint, And elegance outlasts the race.
We favour blends that take their time, That do not shout to be admired. For character, like fragrance well made, Is built, revised, and then refined.
May this year wear well upon the skin, Balanced, thoughtful, quietly sure. If laughter rises now and then, Consider that an added note, intentional and pure.
An essential oil diffuser releases essential oils into the room. They are commonly used in Aromatherapy.
They tend to work in one of two ways. Some essential oil diffusers convert essential oils in to vapours, while others facilitate the natural diffusion of essential oils.
Here are two examples:
Aroma Diffuser: a heated electronic device which either diffuses a mix of water & essential oils or neat essential oils.
Reed Diffuser: a decorative bottle containing an oil scented with essential oils.
Essential oil diffuser are affordable, relaxing, healthy and becoming increasingly popular around the world. Some of their benefits are anti-mosquito, anti-mould, stress relief and other aromatherapeutic effects!
What Are Essential Oils ?
Essential oils are fundamentally plant extracts.
They are produced by pressing, steaming, distilling or extracting different parts of a plant (e.g. fruit, leaves or bark) in order to capture aromatic compounds.
It can often require several kilograms of a plant in order to produce a single bottle of essential oil. As well as being incredibly fragrant, essential oils have other functions in plants as well.
What Are The Risks ?
Essential oils must never be applied directly to the skin and must always be diluted. For example, with water (if this is possible without solvents) or with a harmless carrier oil (e.g. almond oil, olive oil, coconut or sunflower). The typical ratio varies but should generally be only a few percent, e.g. a few drops of essential oil to one ounce of carrier oil.
When performing an allergy test, dilute the essential oil in the carrier oil to twice the planned concentration and apply the mixture to a small area of your body that is not visible. Then wait for on 24-48 hours and check for any reactions along the way.
Never ever consume or swallow essential oils. If ingested orally, these oils can damage the liver or kidneys. Also, keep them away from any sensitive areas of the body, such as eyes, nose or genitalia.
How Should You Use An Essential Oil Diffuser ?
Both an Aroma Diffuser and a Reed Diffuser should be placed in an area of the room from where they can easily fill the room with their scent.
1. Aroma Diffuser:
An aroma diffuser releases a fine mist to spread the essential oil around your room.
The fill them, lift the lid from the top of the diffuser.
In the versions that use water, put water at room temperature into a small measuring cup or glass and add 3 to 10 drops of essential oil. Then pour it directly onto the water storage tank.
For the versions that diffuse pure oils, one literally just places the essential oil bottle into the diffuser.
Replace the top of the diffuser.
2. Reed Diffuser:
These are much easier to use:
Simply open the bottle, insert the reeds and the Reed Diffuser is ready to go.
It is also worth noting that Reed Diffusers do not require a nearby power point and there is no danger of forgetting to switch them off.
3. Essential Oils in Candles and Room Sprays?
Just to avoid any confusion, essential oils can easily be used in candles and room sprays.
Both candles and room sprays are ideal for diffusing essential oils:
perfume candles: the heat of the molten wax is an ideal medium to diffuse and vapourise essential oils.
fragrance room spray: the fine mist of an alcohol based room spray can volatilise even the most difficult essential oils, making it another perfect diffuser of essential oils.
The Benefits of an Essential Oil Diffuser?
Eliminate Odours
Diffusing essential oils can help to eliminate unpalatable odours or smoky and musty smells. Aromatic oils can kill bacteria and fungi, the cause of unpleasant smells, to purify the air.
Tobacco smoke is one of the most difficult odours to eliminate because it penetrates all the objects within the room even when it is ventilated. The best oils against of tobacco malodours are:
Eucalyptus
Guangxiang
Lemon Grass
The musty odour caused by mould and mildew is not only disagreeable, but can also harm your respiratory system or cause a series of health problems. The best natural anti-fungal essential oils are:
Lemon
Grapefruit
Clove
When cooking, the smell in the kitchen can become overwhelming, and the residual smell in the whole house is equally as unwelcome. To eliminate these types of odours in the kitchen, we recommend the following:
Lemongrass
Verbena
Vanilla
Complements Medical Treatments
The National Cancer Institute found that aromatherapy helps to manage the side effects of cancer treatments by sending messages to the brain that affect a patient’s mood via the smell receptors.
It may work for adults suffering from dementia.
Save Money
Using an essential oil diffuser can help to save some money.
When anti-viral, insect repellent or stress relief solutions are integrated into a safe product, an oil diffuser used with the appropriate oil will prevent purchases that may be needed to treat annoying headaches, sleep disorders or anxiety.
Pain-Relief
Although most people will tell you to apply essential oils directly to your body to relieve pain (diluted with carrier oil, of course!), you can also use an essential oil diffuser to extend the effects.
This method is an excellent way to combat persistent pains, such as headaches, joint soreness or muscle fatigue.
Relaxation, Reduce Stress & Improve Sleep
Dispersing oils with relaxing properties can help people of all ages fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly.
Not only can diffusers mix and match different oil blends (try lavender, Bulgarian rose, and Roman chamomile blends to help with insomnia), they can also run with a gentle buzzing sound, helping to relieve restless minds. Many devices also come with an automatic shutdown function, once you fall asleep, to help save oil.
Several laboratory studies have confirmed that the diffusion of essential oils such as lavender can reduce stress and help relieve anxiety in medical patients. Preliminary research also shows that oil dispersions can help relieve symptoms of depression.
Elevate Your Mood
Just as diffusers can help to reduce stress, they can also be used to create vitality and mood in your home.
You can use a diffuser to stimulate cheerful feelings during the holiday season, create a positive atmosphere in the office or social gatherings, help to a ‘spring to your step’ on a slow morning, and even create a romantic atmosphere for that special person in your life
Combat Bacteria & Mould
When essential oils diffuse in the air, they can break down free radicals that cause the growth of harmful bacteria. For this, eucalyptus, thyme and tea tree oil are particularly useful.
The same applies when it comes to fighting against the threat of fungal yeast. Pine and red thyme essential oils are best for fighting yeasts, such as mould.
Cooling Sensation from an Essential Oil Diffuser
During the hot summer season, running the air conditioner all day and all night is a way to ensure that electricity bills are sent through the roof.
Instead, try to spread your favourite refreshing, cool peppermint essential oil in the rooms where you spend most of your time and create a cooling sensation against the heat, perfect for those blistering hot days.
Mosquito & Insect Repellent
No one likes mosquitoes !
However, fighting mosquitos typically includes the use of a repellent full of DEET, a toxic chemical that is particularly harmful to children. This is an unwelcome trade-off.
However, scientists have shown that oil diffusers can be used as a safe and efficient mosquito repellent. Studies have shown that diffusing an oil mixture containing clove essential oil and lemongrass essential oils will repel the Aedes Mosquito, the carrier of the Zika Virus, at a rate of 100%.
Appetite Control
Like chewing gum, essential oil blends can help stimulate the senses by suppressing appetite.
New research shows that dispersing peppermint oil can help suppress appetite by created the feeling or state of being satiated in the body and it has also been shown to increase energy.
Isn’t this a much more pleasant alternative to a diet?
Improve Cognitive Function
Using essential oils in a diffuser is an efficient way to help overloaded brain cells.
This effect works on multiple levels:
First, many essential oils have adaptable properties, which means they will soothe you when you are under stress, but they will also give you a refreshing feeling when you feel depressed or sluggish. By balancing emotions, the oil in the air will help you focus.
Second, there are several essential oils that are known for their powerful ability to balance human hormones. With regular use, these oils can actually help heal the root cause that hinder cognitive function.
The Most Common & Effective Ingredients
Basil Essential Oil is used to increase concentration and relieve certain symptoms of depression. It can relieve headaches and migraines. Avoid taking it during pregnancy.
Bergamot Essential Oil: recent scientific research indicates that bergamot essential oil can reduce inflammation, lower cholesterol and increase positive mood. When mixed with Eucalyptus Oil, it may help to relieve skin problems, including problems caused by stress and chickenpox.
Citronella Essential Oil is a relative of lemongrass and can be used as an insect repellent.
Clove Essential Oil is a topical pain reliever or analgesic, usually used for toothache. It can also be used as an antispasmodic and antiemetic to prevent vomiting and nausea, and it can also be used as a fragrance to prevent gas in the intestines. It has antibacterial, antioxidant and antifungal properties.
Eucalyptus Essential Oil can help relieve respiratory discomfort during a cold or flu. It is often combined with peppermint. Many people are allergic to eucalyptus, so be careful.
Geranium Essential Oil can be used to treat skin problems, reduce stress and act as a mosquito repellent.
Jasmine Essential Oil has been described as an aphrodisiac. Although scientific evidence is lacking, studies have shown that the smell of jasmine will increase beta waves, which is related to alertness. As an irritant, it may increase blood flow to the penis.
Lavender Essential Oil: commonly known to promote calmness, wellness and to reduce stress, nervousness, anxiety, mild pains and the severity of menstrual cramps. It is also said to relieve headache and migraine symptoms. Lavender essential oil is highly recommended as a sleep aid, for people suffering from insomnia or other sleep disorders.
Rosemary Essential Oil can promote hair growth, enhance memory, prevent muscle cramps and support the circulatory system and nervous system. Some people believe that sandalwood oil has aphrodisiac effect.
Thyme Essential Oil is said to help reduce fatigue, nervousness and stress.

Have you ever gone for a walk and come to the realisation that you are walking while under the influence?
That is what we experienced yesterday while walking in Great Windsor Park through the beautiful blooms of Azalea and Rhododendron.
Just before you start tutting or shaking your head in disbelief
I can assure you that everyone who was walking, running, cycling, skating, or being pushed or pulled in some form of a wheeled chariot …. was doing it while under the influence..
Although thinking about it in another sense, it was a sharing of emotions
People had, whether they were aware of it or not while passing through certain sections of the park, become totally intoxicated with the perfumes emanating from the flowering shrub’s, the Azaleas and Rhododendron (the ‘Rose Tree’), the Chestnut trees, Lilac’s, Mock Orange, Honeysuckle, Cut Grass, Forget-me-nots   and the last of the Bluebells…
We were all experiencing a walk through one of ‘Nature’s Natural Perfumeries’.
The only sounds that you could pick up wafting on the fragrant air was the sound of birdsong, the buzzing of Bees, lake water lapping or the occasional child’s laugh.
It was one of those magical Spring days, when Life and nature is intoxicating..
PAIRFUM London’s suggestion is that, wherever you live, in a Town, the Country, by the Sea, …
Put on your shoes, go somewhere and walk (or run) while under the Influence …
If you do stumble across an azalea shrub whilst in spring bloom, you will forever struggle to find anything as beautiful. What makes azalea shrubs so special is that they are like honey as you will always find one that will work for you as there are so many colours to choose from. Furthermore, you can add these colours to your own environment because azaleas can fortunately be easily grown in nearly any garden.
How to care and grow Azaleas and Rhododendron
However, as simple as it may be, if you do choose to add some azalea shrubs to your landscape, there are some things that need to be taken in to consideration to maximise their flowers and fragrance.
Azalea Care
It is crucial that you choose to care for your azaleas professionally and you find a suitable location to plant them to be sure your azaleas keep looking healthy.
If you are fortunate to have a large garden or even a wooded areas then planting lots of azalea shrubs would work well. But in most cases, to show off your azaleas’ true beauty, they are best planted alone.
Azalea shrubs are completely encompassed by flowers, therefore they can look phenomenal against a back drop of pines or other conifers. It will reduce the heavy impact of azaleas while still showing off their vibrant colours.
Unfortunately, when it comes to sunlight azaleas have particular requirements. Too much shade will deprive them of oxygen which will lead to a poor blooming.
The perfect soil for azaleas
Azalea plants need an acidic soil that is well-drained as their roots are quite shallow. If your soil isn’t well-drained, we recommend you place your azaleas in raised beds or even containers.
It would also be ideal to amend the soil with compost before planting the azaleas. If you happen to know if your soil has low levels of nitrogen then you may want look at using fertilizer to stop any nutritional deficiency.
To check if azaleas are nutritionally deficient if you be looking for an early leaf drop, and stunted growth of leaves and the azalea shrub.
Pruning Azalea & Rhododenron
Whether you want to encourage a bushier growth or you wish to keep your azaleas’ compact appearance, you want to wait until after the blooming season is over before you prune them.
Reinvigorate overgrown plants by cutting back & trimming the branches of the azalea shrubs.
You can be sure to have beautiful blooms in abundance for many springs in the years to come if you keep your azaleas healthy during the growing season.

Has the Seaside Lost its Smell and why would Sex on the Beach be the reason?
Who among us does not love a trip to the seaside and all that comes with it: the fresh air, soft sand, the sound of the sea and the tangy aroma we associate with it?
The fresh, salty smell of the ocean is one of the most distinctive smells on the planet.
It evokes memories of crashing waves, sandy beaches, the cry of seagulls and if we are very lucky, the wonderful aroma of Fishing Boats, Ice-Cream & Suntan Lotion.
While travelling for work recently, I decided to stay at a quintessential English Seaside town.
In the days leading up to my visit to the seaside I found that I was really looking forward to it, and I am sure if I could have gotten away with it, I would have brought along a bucket & spade, a fishing net for use in the rock pools and flip-flops.
Then, … I remembered that I had not seen or used my seaside essentials in over thirty years.
(Well, … that is my version of events and I’m sticking to it)
After booking into a small family run hotel, I decided that if I was going to the seaside, then staying in one of the large chain run Hotels was not on.
So, on my first evening there, I went for a walk along the beach.
(Sorry, … but you will have to read a little further on for the ‘sex on the beach’ part)
The sun was setting and a beautiful warm breeze was blowing off the sea, I was in Heaven and had decided to keep an eye out for shops that would sell my seaside essentials after all.
It may have been tiredness or the simple fact that I was so delighted to be by the sea, but it was not until the following morning when I went for a walk on the beach before breakfast and heading off to work, that I noticed that the Seaside had ‘Lost its Smell’!
As a Perfumer for me the World revolves around smell, and if an aroma as distinctive as the Sea is not discernible, then there is something seriously amiss?
If someone asked you ‘what does the sea smell of’ or ‘why does the sea smell like the sea’, would or could the answer be sand, sea breeze or even as the Victorians believed Ozone?
Not one single note can truly conjure up the smell of the sea.
So, … while standing wondering where the seaside smell had gone and at the same time burying my toes in the sand, which is something along with paddling that is a prerequisite when at the seaside,
I noticed that there was not a single strand of seaweed anywhere to be seen on the beach, no seaweed, no seashells only driftwood.
I was delighted to see that there was no rubbish on the beach, but not a single strand of seaweed either?
Then I remembered reading an article where scientists have finally discovered how the seaside odour is produced and it can all be traced back to an enzyme that allows algae to survive in their salty seawater environment.
The smell we recognise as ‘The Sea’ is produced by algae on the ocean surface that release an aromatic compound called dimethylsulfide (DMS) into the air.
While scientists identified ‘DMS’ as the molecule responsible for the distinctive smell of the ocean some years ago, exactly how it was produced in the ocean was unclear.
What was clear was that the molecule plays an important role in cloud formation and also provides chemical attractants that guides various marine animals including some sea birds, invertebrates, and even mammals – toward potential food supplies.
So in our world it is the equivalent to a restaurant sign saying it is open for business …
The researchers also noted that the gene appears to be present in many other marine organisms including ‘Seaweeds’ that also release DMS.
This may explain why so many plants that grow under the ocean or along the coastline have such a distinctive seaside odour, it may also explain why on some days the smell of the sea can be stronger than on others as different algae blooms flourish.
It may also be the reason why we not only know the smell of the sea, but the food that it provides has that distinct flavour that we all associate with it, a fresh brininess that creates that ocean flavour.
When discussing this phenomena with another Perfumer, they mentioned reading an article that spoke about seaweed reproduction, and the fact that during certain times of the year seaweed has a stronger ‘Seaside Odour’ than normal and, …
that scientists had discovered that during the seaweed reproductive cycle the female produced a lot more of these volatile compounds, so that all those handsome virile male seaweed swimming around in the ocean would smell this wonderful Perfume and come a calling.
This gives a whole new meaning to ‘Sex on the Beach’.
So, … the next time you have the opportunity to visit the seaside, spare a thought for that humble wonderful edible seaside dweller, that not only helps provides us with the Seaside smell we love so much, but helps with the formation of clouds and that feeds a myriad of other marine life.
Another thought that should pop into your head is, that if this very special algae is smart enough to use a Perfume to attract their perfect mate.
Then this is the perfect definition of ‘Sex on the Beach’!
What are you waiting for?
A trip to the Seaside perhaps?
Or, … would your time be better spent finding out what is your ‘Perfect Perfume’?
Following numerous emails that we have received, all enquiring if we give or hold talks on Perfumery, we have decided to run a series of Let’s Talk Perfume events.
The format for these events was something that we have discussed at great length, as our aim is to allow as many people as possible to be able to join in.
So simply holding an event in a specific location to start off with, would for obvious reasons be limiting.
However, thank’s to the wonders of technology and the internet, it does not matter if you have written to us from the UK, USA, Switzerland, Nigeria or the U.A.E.
Everyone and anyone can join in no matter where in the World you call Home …
So, … if you are a ‘Perfume Lover’ and you would like to join in then please contact us here.
Or, … contact us via one of our Social Media pages below:
We look forward to hearing from you so that we can all get together and Let’s Talk Perfume.
Here is an example of a ‘Let’s Talk Perfume’ event.
Our perfumer, Huib Maat, was recently interviewed by the ‘StartUp Van’ about perfumery, how he got into fragrances, niche perfume and many other subjects:
Tomorrow Tuesday the 21st of May see’s the opening of the Chelsea Flower show and the unveiling of Kate’s Garden
For this years show the Duchess of Cambridge has designed and helped build a garden called ‘Back to Nature’
The inspiration for this multi-sensorial garden comes from both childhood memories and her work on early childhood development.
Her firm belief that time spent outdoors during childhood playing an exploring, helps build a good foundation for children to become healthy, happy adults.
The Duchess’s theme in the garden also highlights and combines her work as part of the ‘Heads Together Foundation’ that helps people to come together, speak about and care for their mental health.
The aim of the garden is to show what benefits the natural world can bring to mental and physical well-being.
One of the themes that was intertwined into the Garden concept was that of ‘Forest bathing’.
If you have never heard of this before, then we can reassure you that you are not the only one…
‘Forest Bathing’ also known as the practice of ‘Shinrin-Yoku’, is a Japanese concept where research has shown that immersion in forests and other natural environments promotes healing and wellness.
So a visit to a forest is regarded as being similar to natural aromatherapy.
Following research by Japanese scientists that spending at least two hours surrounded by nature in a Forest or natural surroundings, helped to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, boost our immune systems and improve memory and concentration.
The Japanese government in the 1980s introduced it as a national health programme.
It was also discovered during the studies that ‘phytoncides’ which are chemicals released by trees have an anti-microbial effect on humans
So for all of those who thought ‘Tree Hugging’ was only a form of protest to stop felling, then think again…
We should all be walking through, spending time in woods and forests and when no one is looking giving a tree a ‘Little Hug’.
Why not make a trip and immerse yourself into beautiful forest surroundings, and take the opportunity to breathe deeply, de-stress, and enjoy the wonders of a Forest.
Some of the other wonderful aspects of Kate’s Garden include a swing seat, a tree-house, edible plants, a campfire and a rustic den.
What Child would not find this garden enchanting and wonderful to play in..
In fact all of us here at PAIRFUM London, think that the Child within us all would love it xx
