Glass Flowers?

At Homo Faber, the artist Lilla Tabasso exhibits glass flowers of astonishing realism.

The biologist turned artist, uses Murano glass to create her surprisingly realistic flowers.

The milan-based biologist-turned-designer mixes perfect and imperfect in her hyper-realistic murano glass flowers.

Using her knowledge of botany, her flowers show nature in all its wonderful detail and endearing imperfections.

Here at Pairfum London, we feel it is a pity that they are missing a fragrance.

They would make wonderful diffusers!

Undersurface Flowers?

The artist Azuma Makoto contrasts wild roots with perfect blossoms in his ‘Undersurface Flower’ compositions.

Azuma is a Japanese flower artist who pioneered the genre of the ‘botanical sculpture’.

Here at Pairfum London we like how he draws attention to ‘roots’.

In perfumery, ‘roots’ are a frequently used source of natural fragrance ingredients that is regularly underestimated.

For example ‘Orris’, is a root that has a wonderful olfactive profile:

powdery, resembling violet, slightly stemy and woody.

More commonly known roots used for extracting essential oils are ‘Angelica’, ‘Ginger’ and ‘Vetiver’.

This beautiful residence is located in the southern part of Kythera ( Greece ) in the midst of dense Mediterranean vegetation with Olive Trees and tall, old Cypresses.

The home offers impressive panoramic views over the valley, a nearby Venetian castle and the sea.

Looking at the images of this house in its surroundings brings to life the Mediterranean fragrances of the region.

Sauna – Feast for the Senses

The golden Soria Moria sauna looks like a veritable feast for the senses.

This wonderful sauna is located on ‘Bandak Lake’ in Norway, 160km southwest of Oslo, in a picturesque mountainous landscape offering breathtaking views.

The shingles of the cladding shimmer like ‘gold’ in reference to a local, well-known Norwegian fairy tale about a golden palace in the mountains.

What intrigued us as perfumers about this project are the unusual sensorial experience this sauna offers:

the woody & herbal notes of the sauna itself,
the clean, fresh, fragrance filled mountain air of Norway, and
the watery aquatic notes of the lake

Robot Flowers?

Here at Pairfum London we don’t like the idea of ‘Robot Flowers’, as it feels ‘unnatural’ and we would expect them to lack ‘fragrance’.

And yet, we were intrigued by “Studio Drift’s” installation of a ‘hanging bouquet’ of robotic flowers that bloom, as you approach them.

18 mechanical flowers have been choreographed to work in unison as part of a kinetic installation during Dutch Design Week 2018.

The meadow is meant to be an upside down landscape and intends to remind the visitor of the impermanence of changing seasons and the characteristics of natural growth processes.

In other words, the elements we like about nature.

We do find it novel but rather unusual, to use Robots to remind us of the beauty of nature.

Clearly the installation is missing fragrance!

Yes, it’s that time of year again and ‘Love’ it or ‘Loathe’ it, (we are firmly in the ‘LOVE’ it camp) it’s HALLOWEEN ARE YOU READY

This is a festival I grew up celebrating every year, known as ‘Samhain’ the Celtic New Year, marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. Traditionally celebrated from 31 October to 1 November, as the Celtic day began and ended at sunset.

It is mentioned in some of the earliest Irish literature, and the Megalithic passage tombs in Ireland are aligned with the sunrise around the time of Samhain.

The tombs of Newgrange, Knowth, Dowth, Fourknocks, Loughcrew and Tara are located in the present day County Meath in Ireland’s Ancient East.

The Boyne Valley Mounds at Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth were built around 3200BC making them older than Stonehenge in England and the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.
