The Twelve Days of Christmas!

Twelve Days Of Christmas Is Not Yet Finished 12

We have all heard or heard of the song, The Twelve Days of Christmas,

This period over Christmas is also known as Twelvetide, where “Christmas Day” is considered the “First Day of Christmas” and the Twelve Days are the 25th of December to the 6th of January (Old Christmas Day).

Most people look forward to Christmas and spending time with their family, but it is a busy and often a hectic time of year..

So if you do find yourself getting stressed out about it, as we all do at times….

Sleep and Insomnia – How to Fall Asleep with Fragrance

Just spare a thought for the unfortunate person in the song – The Twelve Days of Christmas

The Twelve Days Of Christmas

What! between getting a Pear Tree, that needs pruning and watering, with a Partridge that needs feeding….

To Two Turtle Doves, Three French Hens, Four Calling Birds, by day four you already have an aviary to look after.. and you have not even got the Turkey yet!

Then just when you think that things may be slowing down on the avian side, because after all you had received – Five Golden Rings…

It was just a case of them lulling you into a false sense of security…..

Along comes.. you may already have guessed where this is going… Yes, that right  – Six Geese a Laying…

Just when you think it can’t get any better! – Seven Swans a Swimming arrive on the scene – hopefully not in your garden pond….

Twelve Days Of Christmas Is Not Finished

Now hold on to your hats, because if you thought you had sorted out all the feeding, cleaning, and housing of half the avian population..

Eight Maids a Milking arrive… milking what we don’t know? but it will mean an extra eight people for dinner…

By now, any sensible person would have moved house, gone on holiday or simply broken off the engagement….

However in the case of true love, Nine Ladies Dancing arrived and had to be added to the guest list for Christmas Dinner.

Along with – Ten Lords a Leaping, Eleven Pipers Piping, 12 Drummers Drumming, at this stage the aviary is starting to look like a place of sanctuary

So however or where ever you plan to spend The Twelve Days of Christmas this year….

PAIRFUM London, wish you peace, happiness, patience and lots of restfull sleep xx

What is the Perfect Christmas Gift

What Is The Perfect Christmas Gift?

At this time of the year, in hustle & bustle of pre-Christmas, it is easy to forget why we present gifts and what makes the Perfect Christmas Gift.

With this in mind, we wrote this article.

The Perfect Christmas Gift

What Is A Gift?

Here is a definition:

A gift is something (an item or service) given without the expectation of anything in return.

The gift (or present) may be a tangible item or a service.

We undertake the act of ‘giving’ to sustain our social relations (e.g. friend & family) and / or contribute to social cohesion (e.g. charity).

The intention is to make the other happier or less sad.

Christianity consider the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ to save Humanity to be the greatest gift to humankind.

We accept this sounds all very abstract but felt it is worthwhile at this time of the year to strip everything away and look at the essence of gifting.

Bear with us, you will find out why further down why and what makes the Perfect Christmas Gift.

PAIRFUM Sparkling Christams Champagne Prosecco Glass Gift luxury scented candle reed diffuser

A Little History

The tradition of gift-giving in generally very old and one of the oldest forms of social interaction.

In the ancient Rome, giving a gift probably happened around the winter solstice, which in Europe occurs in December.

In Christianity, during Christmas period, the custom of gifting is symbolic of the ‘The Three Wise Men’ presenting gifts to the baby Jesus.

It is interesting to note that different countries / Christian religions, practice gifting at different times:

England / Ireland / US / Canada: the 25th

Germany / France: the 24th

Netherlands: 6th of December (St. Nicolas)

Spain: gifts are presented on the ‘Three Wise Men’, e.g. 6th of January

Greece: on the Feast of Saint Basil (the 1st / 2nd of January), gifts are presented.

Going back to our original question:

The Psychology Of Gifting

Gifting allows people to connect!

This is the essence of a gift.

When making a gift, the giver shares their feelings & emotions with the recipient.

In receiving these, the recipient makes a connection with the giver.

In giving a gift, we extend and make ourselves vulnerable to the recipient, as it (or we) may be rejected.

This act displays a strong humility or humbleness.

Making connections with the people gives us self-fulfillment, happiness and purpose.

We have all heard the saying:

“It is better to Give, than Receive”

It is the Path to Happiness.

A Perfect Gift?

So, … this leaves us with the question, how do we make a gift perfect this Christmas?

It is simple, actually:

Inject as much as possible of yourself into the gift.

Here are two ways of doing this:

1 – Make Something

2 – Find the Unique

Pairfum London Christmas Coming Calendar 07

Make Something

Show some of yourself by making something for the person you intend to make happy.

Here are some ideas:

Cookies, Pralines or something similar that is made with sticky fingers and tastes delicious.

A Painting, Song, Poem or a hand crafted Christmas Deco Item

Chutney or Marmalade with an unusual flavour profile. Let your phantasy go wild.

A handmade piece of clothing, a scarve or hat.

Well, … we suppose you are getting the gist.

What all of these gifts have in common is, that you are making a gift of your own precious ‘Time’ and ‘Thought’.

In the age of 24/7 and especially pre-Christmas, these two are the most scarce.

When making something, you give especially your ‘Time’.

Most people nowadays can easily afford the gift you are making, but what they can’t buy is your ‘Time’ or ‘Thought’.

The Perfect Christmas Gift Homemade

Find The Unique

When uncovering a gift that is ‘Authentic’ and / or ‘Unique’ you inject your ‘Thought’.

The gift is your skill.

It is your skill (and time) to find something that the recipient would not have been able to purchase her/himself.

It explains why we like Craft Items and the ‘Christmas Market’.

Here are a few ideas that are very popular when giving your ‘skill’ of finding the impossible:

Craft Cheese, Beer, Whisky, Bakery, Chocolates, ….

Products of Limited Quantity or produced in small batches, such as handmade clothing / handbags / jewellery / ….

Niche, Boutique, Artisan or Indie Products with authenticity and limited batch sizes.

This is where we can help you here at Pairfum with our online boutique.

We invite you to introduce your family & friends to Pairfum, The Artisan Perfumers of London, and give them the gift of ‘Your Thought’, it is authentically yours.

You are thinking of them!

This is the Essence of the Perfect Christmas Gift.

Coco Chanel’s Christmas Advice

Coco Chanel Christmas Advice Pairfum London

When shopping for Gifts this year, Coco Chanel has some time-tested Christmas Advice.

Here she is in her own words:

“Be who you are, not what the world wants you to be.” – Coco Chanel

What does this mean for Christmas?

We believe, she is trying to say that when buying gifts, don’t just buy the first item on somebody’s wishlist.

Instead, try and find (or create) a gift that allows you to inject at least a little of yourself into the gift.

Nowadays, most people can afford the gift you present to them and we have all experienced cases of where we got the size, colour or something else wrong.

It is not that easy to understand exactly what somebody is telling you (as we know from “Chinese Whispers”).

Coco’s advice to this dilemma is to inject a little of yourself, rather than trying (and failing) to be what others are asking for.

Don’t be surprised when this works out well for you and keep in mind another ‘Christmas Advice’ from Coco Chanel:

“If you want to be original, be ready to be copied.” – Coco Chanel

Yes, you may have to accept that others will copy the originality of your gifts in the coming years.

Happy Christmas from All of us here at Pairfum London.

Enjoy selecting gifts with originality from our online boutique.

Fragrance of the Christmas Market Gluehwine

What is the Fragrance of the Christmas Market?

Fragrance Of The Christmas Market Gluehwine Germany

Hands up, who hasn’t enjoyed visiting a Christmas Market in Germany?

We doubt there will be many hands in the air.

The German Christmas Markets have become a wonderful tradition that is now being taken up by other countries outside of Germany.

One of the attractions of the pre-Christmas Market are the exhibition of traditional arts & crafts and good old-fashioned habits.

When meandering through such a market one will invariably come past the different food stalls selling a variety of typically German food items, e.g. ‘Reibekuchen’ (or ‘Potato Fritters’).

However, the highlight of any German Christmas market has to be a glass of ‘Gluehwein’.

Visiting without a glass of this delicious drink feels incomplete.

Gluehwein is also known as:
Glogg / Gløgg / Glögg / Glögi
Mulled Wine

It is a spiced, wine that is served warm and can be red or sometimes white wine.

The typical spices are cloves, cinnamon and orange peel with the addition of sugar to the wine.

If you would like a perfume for your home that reminds you of Gluehwine, then try our “Rich Spices” fragrance.

Here is the Perfume Description:

“This richly aromatic and spicy accord opens with hints of Pomegranate and Cranberry,

then flows into a warm heart of Chestnut, Nutmeg, Cinnamon and Clove,

to finally rest on a base of Vanilla Pods and drieg Figs, Dates and Persimmons.”

Pairfum London Rich Spices Clove Aniseed Kitchen

History

Spiced and heated wine was first recorded in Rome during the 2nd century.

It was the conquering Roman army that brought their wine and viticulture with them along the Rhine and Danube rivers.

The oldest documented Gluehwein tankard (dated ca. 1420 AD) is attributed to Count John IV of Katzenelnbogen, a German nobleman who was the first grower of Riesling grapes.

Glögi was originally used to revive the messengers and postmen who travelled on horseback or skis in cold weather in Scandinavia.

Were Persimmons the Inspiration for Christo?

Persimmon Drying Season Japan Christo New York Fragrance 9

Could it really be that the Persimmon fruit was the inspiration for the artist Christo?

Persimmon Drying Season Japan Christo New York Fragrance 3

When looking at the images in this article, we thought ‘maybe’.

There are certainly some striking similarities.

Persimmon Drying Season Japan Christo New York Fragrance

During the persimmon drying season the prefecture in Kansai, Wakayama (Japan) turns orange.

The farms of 70 farmers in Katsuragi resemble the installation of Christo and Jeanne-Claude called “The Gates” in New York in 2005. Orange curtains create ‘gates’ in Central Park.

The similarity with the town in Japan is indeed surprising, when it dresses in orange to celebrate a good harvest of persimmon.

In Japan, the Persimmon, the fruit, also symbolizes ‘longevity’, as the tree has a long life.

If you would like to introduce a little of Persimmon and Cristo into your home this Christmas, we can highly recommend our fragrance ‘Rich Spices’.

The Perfume of “Living Coral” – Pantone Colour of the Year 2019

Pairfum Pantone Living Coral Colour Year 2019 Patch
Pairfum Pantone Living Coral Colour Year 2019 Patch

The Pantone Colour of the year 2019 has been revealed as “Living Coral”.

Here you can read the official announcement by Pantone.

Pairfum Pantone Living Coral Colour Of The Year 2019

Description

How can it be described in words? Is it a warm pink & orange hue, a muted terracotta or a pastel desert? Or, is it all of these in one?

Is was presented as a “life-affirming” colour for consumers wishing to escape from the “onslaught” of social media and digital technology. We as consumers react to this by seeking more authentic and intimate experiences.

“Colour is an equalising lens through which we experience our natural and digital reality and this is particularly true for Living Coral,” said Leatrice Eiseman (Executive Director at the Pantone Color Institute).

“With consumers craving human interaction and social connection, the humanising and heartening qualities displayed by the convivial Pantone Living Coral hit a responsive chord.”

“It represents a feeling that’s out there in the zeitgeist.”

Reading this, it seems the world is calmer and happier than it appears in the news.

On the other hand, it might be the opposite. Maybe we crave a colour that is natural, solid and warm when times are troubled.

To us, here at Pairfum, this colour promises a combination of these words:

holiday in paradise,

natural and yet sophisticated,

positive and life affirming,

soft, warm but still fresh,

safe at home but ready to escape.

Pairfum Pantone Living Coral Colour Patch Year 2019

Pantone Colour of the Year 2018 & 2017

Last year we had “Ultra Violet” and in 2017 Pantone had presented “Greenery”. Two colours that we translated into perfume here at Pairfum London, with these two fragrances:

Black Orchid

Pantone Color Year 2019 Ultra Violet Black Orchid Perfume Pairfum

Neroli Olive

PANTONE Color Year 2017 Greenery Neroli Olive Perfume Pairfum

How do we translate “Living Coral” into a fragrance?

We believe we already introduced a fragrance in 2018 in our collection that perfectly encapsulates the ‘zeitgeist’ of “Living Coral”:

Pink Grapefruit

Here is the fragrance description:

“A vibrant Pink Grapefruit fragrance with the added complexity of Mandarine, Lime and Bergamot.

Floral notes of Jasmin and Lily lend a feminine touch.

Deep sophistication comes from a Sandalwood Accord in the base note”

What do you think of this Perfume to match the Pantone Colour of the Year 2019?

Below is the olfactive triangle for this beautiful note.

Best Top 10 Men’s Colognes

When deciding to write a post on the best men’s colognes, it is normally the – Best Top 10 Men’s Colognes for 2018, or Top 10 Men’s Colognes.

How To Evaluate Sample Test Try Perfume 3

Why Top Ten, why not the Top Twenty or the Top Thirty Five for that matter?

Why refer to them as Colognes for Men, when the word ‘Cologne’ refers to a perfume ‘Classification’, and is not gender specific?

How To Evaluate Sample Test Try Perfume 1

Well now that I am on a roll asking questions! why does it have to be Top Ten Men’s Cologne for 2018 – how about a trip back in time to remember some of the wonderful Men’s fragrances of the 60s, 70s or 80s.

How To Evaluate Sample Test Try Perfume 6

Just like the releases of today, there were some wonderful creations, some you may not have thought so wonderful but they were memorable.

Macho Is Mucho Aftershave Ad

When looking back at the Classic Men’s Perfumes of the 70’s, you quickly realised that the offerings at the time were in general referred to as Men’s Aftershave, as the word ‘Cologne’ was taken to refer to the iconic ‘4711’ – you see we have made some progress…

4711 Cologne 1 ImageSo enough Q&A for now, back to the wonderful Men’s grooming products that have in some instances become classics.

Old Spice Classic Bottle 1

Starting in the late 1960s, single-note musk fragrances became very popular, reaching their peak in the 70s.

Woodstock 70's 1

It was the decade that saw an increase in unisex fragrances, and the creation of the first natural and organic perfumes. It was also the decade in which the number of Men’s fragrances increased in relation to Women’s – for example in the 50s there were 6 Men’s fragrances brought to market – now compare this to 69 that was launched in the 70s…..

English Lavender Aftershave 2

When you mention a particular brand or a perfume name from one of these era’s, most people over the age of 25+ have a memory they can connect to one of these. They could immediately associate them with their Grandfather or even Father.

Tame It's Not Aftershave 1970's

Old Spice: by the Shulton Company(now a part of P&G), although it has been around since the 1930’s, it was in the 1970’s that it changed from being a shaving brand to a fragrance brand by introducing signature scents like ‘Old Spice Burley’. In 2008, the original Old Spice scent was re-branded as “Classic Scent”, with the ‘Old Spice Classic shower gel’  being sold using the wonderful slogan – “The original”- If your grandfather hadn’t worn it, you wouldn’t exist.” – Now if this isn’t a reason to wear fragrance, we don’t know what is!!

Burley Old Spice 1969 2

Kouros: from the Yves Saint Laurent stable which just missed the 70’s, being brought to market in 1981, is a perfume that we could not fail to mention. This Fougère accord that was inspired by a trip to Greece – hence the name, is one that is known by almost anyone who has any interest or love of masculine fragrances.

Original Kouras Bottle 1961

Aramis: by perfumer Bernard Chant in 1965, going back even further into our perfume memory banks. They claimed at the time that this was created to be the most elegant Men’s Cologne in the world, and when worn by the right man who could argue with them…

Aramis Advert 1965

Jovan: the US brand that was founded in 1972 and is synonyms with musk, it was also a market leader in marketing techniques being the 1st Fragrance to sponsor a Rock Band, which it did in 1981 on the Rolling Stones ‘Tattoo You’ tour.

Jovan Musk For Men 1973EAU SAUVAGE: released in 1966 by Christian Dior and was created for them by perfumer Edmond Roudnitska. The name for the perfume was chosen by Dior when his friend Percy Savage turned up late for an appointment … true or not it is certainly an unusual way  to choose the moniker for your new fragrance. It was famous for its fresh, citrusy notes with spicy Lavender on a woody base.

EAU SAUVAGE Bottle Released In 1966 by Christian Dior

Ralph Laurens: their first male fragrance contained a very distinctive pine note, and was packaged in a very disincentive forest green bottle
Polo is one of the first two perfumes by Lauren, and was created by Carlos Benaim in 1978.

Ralph Laurens Polo Their First Male FragranceFaberge Brut: first launched in 1964 by Fabergé, called “The Essence of Man” in one of its advertisements, and who could forget the U.K. advertising campaign with the heavyweight boxer Sir Henry Cooper who asked us to “splash it all over”.

Faberge Brut 1964Paco Rabanne Pour Homme: the first of the aromatic-fougère family, combining spicy and woody notes, Since 1973 this fragrance has been an established cornerstone of contemporary perfumery. It inspired countless men’s fragrances for decades after it’s launch.

Paco Rabanne Pour Homme 1973

Pour Monsieur – In 1972 Pierre Cardin launched his first men’s fragrance, it was a classic of the spicy masculines notes of the 1970’s, and one of the first to come in a non-aerosol spray. The reason for mentioning this is, that Gentlemen were for the most part, used to applying their ‘aftershave’ using the ‘Splash’ method. With the advent of atomisers there was for a time – a tenancy to shall we say “Over apply”, until the lessons of ‘Less is More’ was grasped.

Pour Monsieur – In 1972 Pierre CardinTabac: created by Mäurer & Wirtz in 1959, it may be around for almost 5 decades, but it is loved as much now as it was then – despite or maybe because of the priceless – “Peter Wyngarde Smells – long pause – Great”…… advert.

Smells TABAC December 1971

I was told by someone recently, that one of their most vivid memories of the 70s was of them as a child choosing a Christmas or birthday gift for their father or grandfather. Due to the lack of choice in both what was on offer and their budget constraints, it was a toss-up between Old Spice, Brut, Blue Stratos or if all else failed Denim – well the advert for Denim aftershave did say “It looks good on a Woman but smells better on a Man”….. quite an achievement that an Ad can make you both smile and cringe simultaneously…..

Denim Ad 1977 Looks Good On A Woman

There are so many wonderful Men’s Colognes from the 50s, 60s, 70s & 80s, that we can’t mention them all – especially in an article entitled the Best Top 10 Men’s Colognes.

Aramis Aftershave 1

However we could not finish off without mentioning the colourful, wonderful, imaginative and in some cases most definitely suspect advertising campaigns that went along with these fragrances and the era.

Old Spice Musk Perfume Ad Vintage

For starters – how about encouraging Men to “Start a fire, that Women can’t put out” – as if Women are not busy enough already… Or Play Dirty it’s Cricket..Play Dirty Its Cricket 1966 Aftershave

How about “Englishmen have more dash, Italians are suave- How come Scandinavian Men get to carry on the way they do?” – well to find out the answer to that you would have to ask Shulton the makers of Teak Men’s fragrance in 1968…

Teak By Shulton 1968 Funny Ad For Mens Colonge

Men’s Colognes have been around for thousands of years, albeit under a large number of different guises. They have the ability to capture our attention, and the reason for wearing them ? well if we are very honest it is to capture the attention of other people. They have become a part of our everyday life, and if you were to ask almost every man you know do they wear Cologne, Aftershave of Perfume, then the answer would be a resounding “YES” and it is really easy to see WHY!!
