4 x Tips for Choosing the Right Perfume for You

It’s not uncommon for a unique scent to trigger a long forgotten memory or association. That’s the beauty and power of fragrances.

When it comes to choosing your signature scent, it’s not as easy as looking at the shape and style of the perfume bottle, or reading online reviews. You need to pick a scent that will please your senses and suit your personality.

Whether you’re a perfume fanatic or you’re new to fragrances, choosing the right perfume can be a daunting and intimidating task. You need to understand the different fragrance notes and families, and find one that you’d like to be associated with.

A memorable scent will make people notice you as you enter or exit a room. This feat can be more easily achieved by picking a niche perfume, as they’re more unique when compared to other mass-produced fragrances.

At Pairfum, you can find a wide variety of exquisite fragrances as well as room sprays, diffusers, scented candles and much more. Our in-house perfumers are dedicated to creating a variety of unique and tasteful fragrances that can make you stand out from the crowd.

In this article, we’re going to provide you with some helpful tips for choosing the perfect perfume. Let’s get started.

1. Do Your Research

Don’t pick your perfume based on current trends and popularity. Take your time to learn more about your style and your tastes. Read up on your preferred fragrance families and notes, and find out the differences between them.

Gain a basic understanding of the various floral or fruity ingredients used in making the perfumes, and find a scent that you’d be comfortable wearing. The scents that you come in contact with on a daily basis can also be used as a starting point to help you get a hint of which key notes you’d like in your chosen fragrance.

2. Pay Attention to Notes

Perfume notes are the various scent layers that make up a fragrance. When choosing your perfect perfume, you need to pay close attention to the notes. Each perfume or cologne has a variety of notes, and these work in synergy to determine their overall scent. While some perfumes have floral or fruity notes, others may have spicy, woody or leather-based notes.

Before committing to a perfume, try to identify its base notes as that will typically last longer than the other notes. You could also choose your preferred notes based on when and where you’d like to wear it. For example, a sensual scent may be better suited for a night out, rather than an office space.

Check out our niche perfumes to find your unique fragrance notes.

3. Choose Your Preferred Concentration

There are four levels of concentration for perfumes. While the fragrances with higher concentrations offer powerful scents and are long lasting, they tend to be a bit more expensive. The perfumes with lower concentrations may not last as long, but they are fairly affordable and easier to find in stores.

The fragrance concentrations include parfum, eau de parfum, eau de toilette, and eau de cologne. Consider the event for which you intend on wearing the perfume and how long you want the scent to last. These factors can help you pick an appropriate perfume concentration.

4. Sample Your Scents

Just because a scent smells good on one person, doesn’t necessarily mean that it’ll smell the same on another. Your environment, the time of the day, and your personal body chemistry play into how a fragrance smells on your skin. That’s why one of the most crucial parts of choosing perfumes is to try them on.

You can spray a small amount of the perfume on your wrist and allow the warmth of your skin to reveal the scent. You should also wait a few minutes after testing the scent as your skin’s natural hormones and pheromones can either diminish or enhance the fragrance. However, if you’re still unable to choose the perfect perfume, you could try layering various scents to build your unique fragrance.

Constructing Your Beauty Fridge: 5 Products That Should Be Refrigerated

Should you invest in a beauty fridge

Throughout 2022 and into 2023, beauty fridges have taken the world by storm. Many beauty influencers and gurus have shown support for the idea of storing beauty products in a fridge.

While it may sound odd, refrigerating your beauty products has multiple advantages. This is especially true for the hotter months, when your beauty, cosmetic and perfumery products are more likely to deteriorate in terms of quality and shelf life.

Advantages of a Beauty Fridge

Ideally, the average fridge temperature is said to range from around 3 – 5°C. When it comes to beauty products, they each have their own directions for storage. However, it is generally advised that you keep them away from extremely hot temperatures or direct sunlight.

A cosmetic fridge will help provide a cool temperature for your products year round, which will save them from degradation and keep their textures and formulas intact. Moreover, you will find that your products feel more refreshing and have an extended shelf life.

That said, some skincare products should be exclusively stored in a mini skin care fridge.

Now that you understand the benefits of refrigeration, you might wonder what you can put in your beauty fridge. Let’s explore some beauty products that do well when refrigerated.

5 Products That Belong in Your Beauty Fridge

Pairfum London Woman Skin Care Face Hand Beauty Fridge

1. Probiotic and Prebiotic Skincare

Prebiotic and probiotic skincare work as efficiently as they do due to one key ingredient: bacteria. These skincare products are specifically made to target specific skin issues and goals. They can significantly improve your skin’s surface protection by ensuring that your skin’s barrier is intact and healthy.

The microbes in these products can also deal with skin issues like acne and psoriasis. Besides that, these products also help you balance your skin’s microbiome. However, due to the presence of bacteria, these products need to be stored in a beauty fridge to retain their effectiveness.

To prevent bacteria and fungi from growing in your preservative-free skincare, it is also advisable to keep it as cool as possible.

2. Perfumes and Fragrances

While this may sound unusual, another product that you can store in your beauty fridge is perfume.

Many consumers are adopting the trend of storing perfume in a refrigerator. There is a reason for this: refrigerating your perfumes can considerably increase their shelf life.

Perfumes need to be stored in an ideal environment where it is cool, dark and dry. A beauty fridge provides this exact environment to keep your perfumes safe from degradation by keeping their ingredients fresh and the note as close as possible to the original profile when you bought it.

Moreover, it’s always more refreshing to apply some cool perfume on your skin, particularly on a hot day.

3. Facial Skincare Tools

There are plenty of skincare tools that complement different types of skincare routines. From a gua sha to a facial roller, every single skincare tool has its own benefits for the health of your skin. However, storing them in ideal conditions is crucial to avoid any deterioration in their quality.

Facial skincare tools are specifically designed to improve blood circulation, drain unwanted toxins and enhance the absorption of serums, moisturisers and face oils. They can also be used to depuff and cool the skin. If stored in a beauty fridge, these products remain cool and will help soothe your skin.

4. Sheet Masks

Sheet masks are a core product in the skincare industry as they are the “quick fix” for multiple skincare problems. Whether you want to treat acne, control oil and blackheads or simply revitalise your skin, there’s a sheet mask for everything. Sheet masks are predominantly made up of materials like cotton, cotton wool, bamboo pulp or coconut pulp.

In addition to that, they contain special serums, fruit secretions and other important nutrients that help your skin strengthen its barrier. Due to this, it is important to store sheet masks in a cool environment where these ingredients can remain potent. Refrigerating your sheet masks will give you a refreshing skin care experience, as well as increase the shelf life of your masks.

5. Eyeliners, Mascara, Serum, Oils & Make-up

Besides skincare products, your beauty fridge can also be a wonderful place to store your makeup products, serums & natural oils. This is especially true for products like eyeliners and mascara, which have thick consistencies and can be easily ruined if they are stored in a humid, hot area.

With ingredients like lanolin, castor oil and a variety of waxes and colours, these products need refrigeration to ensure that the chemicals in the formula don’t have a negative reaction over time. Cooling these products also helps you keep them fresh and intact so that your makeup look appears more defined.

For the exact same reasons, you should also keep your skin care serums, natural oils and make-up in a mini skin care fridge, as it prevents their exposure to heat, light and humidity.

3 Reasons You Need a Mini Fridge for Perfume Storage

What do you normally store in your fridge? We bet it is just your regular dairy or food items, like milk, eggs, meats, vegetables and much more.

It may sound unusual but many perfume enthusiasts, e.g. parfumistas, fragheads, … have been promoting the trend of storing fragrances inside a mini fridge. There has been a lot of debate about whether or not it is safe to store your perfumes inside a fridge. We wanted to shed some light on why this is the ideal perfume storage option.

When it comes to fragrances, toilet waters, after shaves, eau de parfums and colognes, they all contain a high level of alcohol and between 50-200 different fragrance ingredients. The fragrance ingredients can be natural (e.g. essential oils), nature-identical or synthetic but each has specific storage instructions that are unique to it with regards to:

  • temperature,
  • light,
  • oxygen
  • humidity,
  • … and more

Just like you and many beauticians and make-up artists may store their skincare, beauty and make-up products in a mini fridge (also called beauty or make-up fridge), you will be able to maximise the lifespan of your perfumes if you keep them refrigerated.

Let’s explore the reasons why you should consider a mini fridge for perfume storage.

3 Reasons to Invest in a Mini Fridge for Perfumes Storage

Eau De Parfum Person Reflection Pink Rose Sensuous Musk Mini Fridge

1. Cooling Slows Down Perfume Ingredient Degradation

It is well established fact amongst perfumers and cosmetic scientist that heat accelerates ageing of their precious ingredients, whist cooling does the opposite. However, cooling taken to its extreme, i.e. the freezing of ingredients, may destroy their integrity. In other words, gentle cooling that you typically find in a household fridge is optimal.

When you purchase a perfume or fragrance, it starts to degrade the moment you open the box and expose the flacon to the elements: light, heat, oxygen, humidity. From the minute you purchase your perfume, take it out of the box and place it in your bed-or bathroom this process of perfume degradation begins.

Once the perfume is exposed to the outside environment, each individual ingredient within the perfume start to react with the elements in the outside environment and this causes degradation. You cannot stop or prevent this from happening, which is why we always recommend that you should use & enjoy your perfume, as it will not last forever. You can, however, slow down this ageing process by storing the perfume in a cool environment.

Few of us like, however, to keep their perfume (or beauty, make-up or skin care products) next to their food items, particularly food items that make take on the odour of your perfume, e.g. milk, bread, …

This is why it is beneficial to use a mini fridge for perfume storage. A mini fridge will provide a cool, dark environment, allowing the perfume to maintain its integral properties and stay fresh for longer.

Also, it is much more practical to keep a mini beauty fridge in your bath- or bedroom rather than having to go to the kitchen to apply your fragrance when getting dressed.

Mini Fridge Beauty Skin Care Makeup Perfume

2. Perfumes Storage In A Dark Space

The case that your perfume comes in serves an important additional purpose. Obviously, the packaging is designed to present your perfume beautifully.

It provides, however, a most important secondary benefit by keeping the perfume bottle away from light. To some extend it also protects it the extremes of heat or cold but only for a short while, for example the time it takes you bring the perfume home in the heat of the midday sun or the freezing cold of shopping before Christmas.

Perfumes are made up of different ingredients, which can be chemical or natural. Some of these are flowers, spices, roots, herbs, citrus types but there are many more. Some of these react very sensitively to sunlight, such as spices, some flowers and vanilla.

If you want to maximise the time your favourite perfume and cologne keep their ideal olfactory profile, there are some some simple precautions that we recommend you keep in mind.

This is why it is so important to store your perfume the right way. One thing to keep in mind is that your perfumes need to be kept in a dark and dry place to protect it from its main aggressors, which are light, oxygen and humidity.

Moreover, perfumes are also required to be stored in a cool place. A sunny place, like your windowsill or a cabinet near a heater, will quickly destroy your perfume. A fridge, however, ensures that your perfume stays away from heat, light and humidity, which makes it an excellent option for perfume storage.

Additionally, if you store your perfumes in your bathroom, you need to stop immediately. It may be more logical, as you’re likely to get dressed for the day in the bathroom, but it is not ideal for perfume. There are changes in the bathroom temperature multiple times a day, for example, when you take a shower. It is also wet and humid for the most part, which causes perfume degradation.

How To Evaluate Fragrance Sample Test Smell Perfume Mini Fridge

3. Increases Shelf Life

All types of perfumes have a lifespan. No matter what fragrance you are using, it will have a lifespan of about two to three years, depending on its composition. Usually, synthetic perfume ingredients tend to have a longer shelf life and fragrances with natural ingredients require more protection.

Clean fragrances and formulations have shorter shelf lives as they are made without the use of stabilisers, preservatives or fragrance extenders. These fragrances might require additional care when it comes to perfume storage.

Refrigerating these types of perfumes can help extend their shelf life. Besides keeping their original olfactive profile, they will last as long on your skin, as when you bought them.

For example, you may find that where you have stored your perfume in a fridge that the note stays fresher for longer.

Are You Craving a Good Night’s Sleep? 14 x Tips!

Scientific Research shows that nearly 60% of us are struggling to sleep well and yet we all value a Good Night’s Sleep.

Sleep is as important for your body as a healthy diet or regular exercise and poor sleep has been linked to weight gain and heart disease amongst other long term health conditions.

The effects of ‘lack of sleep’ are immediate, both physically and mentally, and it can become hard to concentrate. Over time this can lead to further worries about the lack of sleep, with ever decreasing circles that can end in anxiety or even depression.

It is important to take steps to improve the quality of your sleep as soon as possible. Start and create a routine and have a `bedtime’, a regular time you go to bed.

Woman Sleeping Hiding Under The Covers Good Night's Sleep

Dr. Fariha Abbasi-Feinberg, a director at the AASM, recommends adopting healthy sleep routine and suggests the following 14 x tips to address short-term insomnia:

  1. Keep a consistent sleep schedule. Get up at the same time every day, even on weekends or during vacations.
  2. Set a bedtime that is early enough for you to get at least 7 hours of sleep.
  3. Don’t go to bed unless you are sleepy.
  4. If you don’t fall asleep after 20 minutes, get out of bed.
  5. Establish a relaxing bedtime routine.
  6. Use your bed only for sleep and sex.
  7. Make your bedroom quiet and relaxing. Keep the room at a comfortable, cool temperature.
  8. Limit exposure to bright light in the evenings.
  9. Turn off electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bedtime.
  10. Don’t eat a large meal before bedtime. If you are hungry at night, eat a light, healthy snack.
  11. Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy diet.
  12. Avoid consuming caffeine in the late afternoon or evening.
  13. Avoid consuming alcohol before bedtime.
  14. Reduce your fluid intake before bedtime.

Our recommendation is to invest in a good sleep spray and spray your pillow and sheets before you go to bed. The blend of Lavender, Chamomile and Neroli is scientifically proven to aid with falling asleep.

Following as many of these 14 x Tips as you can, gives you the best chance of getting a Good Night’s Sleep, even at times when it is difficult.

10 Tips From A Perfumer On How To Make Your Perfume Last Longer

Ideas from our perfumer, that are simple and yet effective on ‘how to make your perfume last longer’.

It can be very disappointing, to say the least, when you have spent your Money, Time and Energy choosing your perfect or preferred perfume for the day, only to then discover that the scent has disappeared or is very faint shortly afterwards,

Thankfully it doesn’t have to be that way.

Here are 10 x Top Tips from a Perfumer how to make perfume last longer and what you can do to enhance your scent to help it linger all day.

Eau De Parfum Person Reflection Spiced Coffee Oaked Vanilla Woman 1 1

Enjoy Your Fragrance For Longer:

  1. Store your favourite perfume in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight. Light and heat will cause your fragrance to deteriorate, in terms of quality, longevity and colour.
  2. Apply an unscented moisturiser or lotion to the areas on your skin where you plan to spray your fragrance. The lotion will ‘bind’ the fragrance to your skin and make it longer lasting.
  3. Apply your perfume onto your pulse points plus your wrists, behind your knees and on your ankles.
  4. Don’t press your wrists together as the friction will stimulate the evaporation of the light top notes. Top notes are usually light and fresh.
  5. Fan or open your hair and spray fragrance lightly into it. Your hair will cover the perfume to reduce its evporation and yet every time you move during the course of your day, your perfume will come to the fore.
  6. Choose a fragrance that works with and for you, if possible opt for an ‘Eau de Parfum’ rather than the lighter ‘Eau de Toilette’ or ‘Eau de Cologne’. It may cost more initially but it is better value for money in the long run, as ‘Eau de Parfum‘ contains a higher concentration of oils that will last longer on the skin.
  7. Spraying or Spritzing on to a favourite scarf or subtly on your clothes is also an excellent way way to retain and surround yourself with your chosen perfume. However be very careful not to spray too much and from a very close range, as the oil in the perfume can stain fabrics. Maybe a better way would be to spray the air and walk through it.
  8. Apply your Perfume following a shower when you have finished moisturising your skin (preferably with an unscented lotion or oil), and just before dressing, as it will adhere to your skin and clothes, and release slowly with your movement and body temperature during the day.
  9. Layer your perfume during the day. The Pairfum London Collection is designed to be layered or worn as standalone Fragrances. One way is to choose your ‘Morning’ fragrance and then choose a complimenting Perfume to refresh with during the day. This also allows you to create your own unique signature scent and the only limiting factor is your imagination.
  10. The most important ‘Tip’ is to choose a Perfume that you love and that loves you back. In other words, find a Fragrances that complements you and you know you have got it right, when you get compliments.

Now you too can make your fragrance last longer.

What Is Sensehacking

Sensehacking & How It Can Change Your Life

Psychedelic Depiction Of Sensehacking

What Is Sensehacking ?

Sensehacking is a phenomenon that is explored by Professor Charles Spence in his new book by the same name.

In a sentence, Sensehacking allows us to improve our emotional wellbeing (as well as our cognitive and social wellbeing) by stimulating our senses in different and specific ways. The professor is conducting research as to how we might develop our understanding of this phenomenon to create multisensory environments, interfaces, products and even food.

Why Is Sensehacking So Important ?

Just as an unbalanced diet can lead to poor health, an imbalance in our sensory stimulation can also cause us to experience a number of problems such as stress, anxiety and depression. Such problems can cause someone to struggle to get enough sleep, which actually increases your chance of dying from one of the leading causes of mortality.

In today’s world, this imbalance comes from too much visual and auditory stimulation through excessive screen time, ear phones etc, while on the other hand there is a lack of tactile and fragrant stimulation. All of which are our considered to be our more emotional senses. This isn’t a judgement on your personal choices, this is simply the world that we live in.

Sensehacking With A Bouquet Of Flowers

Life in Lockdown

Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, this sensory imbalance has only been exacerbated. For example, we have all heard very sad stories of care home residents being denied the most basic of pleasures of being embraced by their loved ones.

Even before Covid-19, over 90% of the lives of those living in urban environments were spent indoors, often leading to ‘light hunger’ and even Seasonal Affective Disorder. But, throughout lockdown our environmental stimulation has become even more monotonous. The lack of variety and the abundance of the mundane exposure to screens via Zoom and Netflix are not without consequence.

Fortunately, Sensehacking does bring a solution.

Sensehacking With Nature

Sensehacking In Practise

The Power Of Touch

Skin makes up just under 20% of your total body mass – making it the largest sensory organ in (or on) the human body. Wherever hair is grown (e.g. excluding palms and soles), there are receptors called ‘C-Tactile Afferents’ that elicit a pleasure response. This response is best encouraged through slow and gentle stroking (e.g. a massage).

Infact, just like a massage, if the touch is warm (in regards to temperature, although emotionally helps as well), and if there is a pleasant fragrance in the air, the wellbeing benefits are further enhanced.

However, unlike massages, research into Sensehacking concludes that multisensory stimulation of our skin is a biological necessity, not a luxury.

Woman Holding Flower Sensehacking

The Smells & Experiences Of Nature

One of the key principals of Sensehacking is the benefit that being in and amongst nature can have on our wellbeing. It is paramount that the exposure to nature has an all encompassing impact on your sensory stimulation. For example, Sensehacking explores how ‘Anthropocene Noise’ (such as the noise of traffic) can dramatically reduce the benefits of being in nature.

Ideally, as well as looking and listening to nature, you should look for a tactile experience such as feeling the ground beneath your toes or perhaps gardening and growing your own herbs. In fact, growing your own herbs will expose you to the fifth and most important sensory stimulation that nature provides – smell.

Fortunately, the efficacy of nature’s stimulation through our sense of smell is not impacted by whether or not we are actually amongst nature. While it is best to experience the smells of different grasses and wild flowers, Sensehacking shows that air fresheners or scented candles reflecting the aroma of nature can be just as effective. For example, a lavender fragrance as part of aromatherapy can be framed in terms of ‘smelling nature’ – e.g. the olfactory effect.

Furthermore, the positive impact of natural fragrances within the home becomes more pronounced in times of stress and uncertainty – which as we discussed previously, are often caused by an imbalanced sensory diet in the first place.

Sensehacking Through Gardening

Taking The First Steps

We would suggest that you might find our large bell reed diffuser to be effective in bringing the outdoors indoors.

Our natural product is perfect for your home and provides your living space with a continuous fragrance. This will allow you to take full advantage of the perks that Sensehacking has to offer.

We understand that you may prefer some fragrances over, so we invite you to have a look at our full range here to find a diffuser that suits your tastes.

If you are unsure as to which fragrance suits your style, many of our customers have found the perfume experience box to be very useful.
