How To Choose A Perfume? 4 x Tips from a Perfumer

Eau De Parfum Person Reflection Pink Rose Sensuous Musk How To Choose A Perfume

Introduction

How to Choose a Perfume?” This is a question that we frequently hear from our customers.

They don’t want to be left empty-handed when it comes to a special occasion when they know that a fragrance would be ideal: Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Birthday, Wedding, Anniversary, Christmas, … We are sure you can think of many more.

A beautiful bottle of fragrance can be a great gift to show your partner, mother or friend just how much you love or appreciate them, but knowing which fragrance to pick can be tricky. From various different notes and ingredients, to different strengths and formulations, picking the right scent can be difficult. A fragrance is such a personal choice.

Huib Maat, our Master Perfumer at Pairfum London is ready to help:
“When it comes to selecting a perfume as a gift, it’s important to remember that fragrance is deeply personal and evocative. The right scent can transport you to a special moment or memory. This is what makes it such a powerful and meaningful gift for occasions like Christmas, Valentine’s or Mother’s/Father’s Day.”

Here Huib shares a simple guide on how to choose a perfume.

1. Consider The Strength

Let’s start with: “How to choose a perfume concentration?”

Fragrances come in various different strengths, with more concentrated perfumes able to last longer due to a higher concentration of fragrance oils.

If you want to be a little more extravagant, or you know your partner seldom tops their perfume up over the day, then opt for a stronger formulation such as a Parfum (last 6 -8 hours) or Eau de Parfum (4 – 5 hours). Also consider the ‘Intense’ or ‘Extreme’ versions of the accord. They have become increasingly popular over the past years.

Eau de Toilettes and Eau de Colognes are more cost-effective and very popular fragrance options. They usually last between 1 – 3 hours and are less likely to overwhelm the senses, if you’re not 100% sure about a more intense scent.

We have an in-depth guide the Pros & Cons of the different perfume concentrations in our Frequently Asked Questions section for perfumes.

2. Pay Attention To The Fragrances They Already Wear

If you know the types of fragrances the person already likes, you can use that information to help pick something new.

Perfumes all come with distinct notes, and are often put into scent or olfactive categories such as Woody, Musk, Citrus and Floral. Find out which olfactive category the person prefers as well as the scent notes in their favourite perfume before looking for something similar.

For example, if they like Amber scents, they might like something with similar woodsy, sweet notes such as scents that have notes of cardamom, vanilla and wood.

Should you like to find out more, we have an introduction to the language of perfumery and explain how to describe perfume.

3. Try Before You Buy

You may ask: “How to choose a perfume when I am in the middle of the perfumery isle?”

Many department and beauty stores will offer testers for fragrances. Take advantage of this opportunity to sample a few different scents before making your final decision.

When trying different perfumes, make sure you use a paper smelling strip first, as opposed to your hand. Only when you find something that you like from the paper should you offer your hand or arm to test it on your skin.

This is how you how you do it:

  • Write the name of the scent on the strip before spraying it 2 – 3 times, giving it a second to dry.
  • Now, smell the strip. Make sure not do this too deeply, as you will fatigue or block your nose. Instead, smell lightly until you sense the top notes before pulling it away.
  • Come back to this strip later to get a feel for the heart and base notes before you make a decision as these can drastically alter your perception of the scent.
  • Once you like the note, try it on your skin. Only on your skin can you get a true sense of whether this is the perfect perfume for you.

But wait, … you are choosing perfume for somebody else!

The Perfume Experience Box is an ideal solution in this situation. It allows the person to trial 12 x different fragrances:

  • in their own home (and without the scented cloud of the perfumery isle),
  • at their own pace (and not in a rush through the airport),
  • first on paper and then on their skin, and
  • over time to see how long the fragrance lasts.

This is how to choose a new perfume for somebody else and it is nearly impossible to get it wrong. You no longer have to find the perfect perfume. They will and they will thank you.

4. Ask For A Tester

Even if you think you have got a perfect pick, it’s not a bad idea to see if you can get a mini tester of the fragrance you are buying for your loved one to test out before ‘cracking open’ the big bottle. This means you or your loved one can return the scent easily, if it’s not the right fit.

Having a tester is especially helpful if you are not sure whether you bought the right concentration or whether you should have opted for a more intense fragrance.

With this in mind, we include a ‘free tester’ with every fragrance order to ensure your confidence that you can exchange it without difficulties.

Ultimately, the most important thing is to select a fragrance that you think the person will love and that will make them feel special.

4 x Perfume Layering Tips for a Long Lasting Experience

Fragrance is an essential aspect of personal grooming. It has the power to set the mood and make a lasting impression on the people you come in contact with. Frequently, however, fragrances tend to fade away quickly, leaving us feeling disappointed. One solution to this problem is perfume layering

By combining different products with different scents to work together harmoniously, you can extend the life of your fragrance and enjoy its aroma for a longer period of time. This includes shower gels, body lotions, and perfumes, among others. Not only does layering help to prolong the fragrance, but it also allows you to create a personalised scent that is unique to you.

However, not all oils in perfumery are created equal, so you will have to choose notes that complement each other and work together to create a harmonious scent. The right perfume combination can help to intensify the scent, making it last longer and smell more luxuriously unique.

At Pairfum, our in-house perfumer is passionate about fragrances. He uses his innovative skills to create an exquisite variety of unique aromas. Our luxurious collection includes niche perfumes, diffusers, scented candles, room sprays and much more.

In this blog, we will dive into the world of perfume layering and provide you with practical tips and tricks that you can use to create a long-lasting fragrance experience. Get ready to take your fragrance game to the next level!

1. Understand the Science of Perfume Layering

perfume layering tips; a scientist smelling a scent

Fragrance layering is the process of combining different scents to create a unique and personalised fragrance. It involves selecting aromas that complement each other and applying them in a specific order to enhance the overall scent experience.

The science behind combining fragrances lies in the understanding of perfume notes and how they interact with each other. Each fragrance is made up of top, middle, and base notes, and when layered, these notes interact to produce a new scent.

Layering can also increase the longevity of fragrances, as some scents fade away quickly while others can last longer. Finding the ideal perfume combination is the key to creating a long-lasting and enjoyable fragrance experience.

Check out our amazing selection of niche fragrances and other aromatic skin care products to practise your layering techniques.

2. Learn the Importance of Fragrance Notes

Pairfum Natural Niche Perfume Home Fragrance Olfactory Triangle perfume layering

Fragrance notes refer to the different layers that make up a single fragrance. Most fragrances have top, middle, and base notes, each with their own distinct scents and longevity.

The top notes are the first scents you smell, and they tend to fade away quickly. Middle notes, also known as heart notes, develop after the top notes have faded, and they make up the bulk of the fragrance. Finally, base notes are the foundation of a fragrance and are the scents that linger the longest.

Understanding fragrance layers allows you to create a scent that is unique and personal to you. By overlaying different fragrances, you can create a scent that lasts longer and has a more complex and interesting scent profile. This is why perfume layering is a popular technique among fragrance enthusiasts and perfume connoisseurs.

3. Choose the Right Product and Fragrances

Eau De Parfum Person Reflection Sea Salt Sage Amber Woman Kiss 1 1

Choosing the right combinations is the key to achieving your desired scent and longevity. Make sure to select fragrances that complement each other, rather than clash. Consider the fragrance notes as well as the strength and longevity of each product.

As lighter scents tend to fade quickly, layering with a stronger fragrance can help to extend the overall scent. Additionally, you should choose products with a similar intensity level to ensure that the fragrance is not too overpowering. Look for fragrance oils or opt for a combination of scents that have been carefully selected to work well together.

By layering a floral fragrance with a citrus scent, you can create a bright and refreshing aroma, while layering a woody fragrance with a spicy scent can create a warm and cosy aroma. Experiment with different combinations of fragrances to find one that best suits your perfume preferences.

To find your perfect signature scent, check out our ideal perfume experience box.

4. Layer Fragrances for a Customised Scent

custom perfume layering; a woman smelling her wrist

To properly layer fragrances, start by applying the lightest scent first, followed by the next lightest, and so on. This allows each fragrance to build upon the previous one, creating a unique and complex scent.

You should also allow each fragrance to dry completely before applying the next, as this helps to avoid any unwanted mixing of scents. Additionally, be mindful of the fragrance intensity, as combining too many strong fragrances can lead to an overwhelming scent

Start with small amounts of each fragrance, and add more if necessary, until you reach the desired intensity. With a little practice, combining fragrance oils can be a fun way to create a customised scent that is uniquely yours.

Prebiotic Lotion Benefits: Restore Balance to Your Skin’s Microbiome

When it comes to skincare, you’ve probably experimented with a huge variety of products in an attempt to get the clear and glowing skin that we all crave.

Just like your body, your skin needs nourishment to keep it moisturised and healthy. However, skincare can often be tricky, as some product ranges contain harmful ingredients that can negatively affect your skin. One of the best organic solutions for this is prebiotic skincare products.

Prebiotic lotions and oils can help to improve the overall appearance of your skin, leaving it looking smoother, brighter and more youthful.

At Pairfum, our in-house perfume artisans have developed a variety of prebiotic organic hand and body lotions to help you rehydrate and moisturise your skin. Our products are made with natural ingredients and breathtaking fragrances.

We also offer a wide range of fragrant products from niche perfumes to home fragrances. Regardless of your aroma preferences, we’ve got everything you need!

That being said, this article is all about prebiotic lotion benefits and how it can enhance your skincare routine.

What are Prebiotics?

If you’d like to maintain radiant and healthy skin, you’ll need an effective skin care routine including cleansing, exfoliating, toning, and moisturising.

In order to protect your skin, you need to understand your skin’s microbiome, which refers to the ecosystem of microorganisms that live on your skin. This comprises a balanced amount of good and bad bacteria.

Prebiotics are non-digestible carbohydrates that act as food for the good bacteria that live on your skin. These bacteria play a vital role in maintaining your skin’s health and balance.

When applied topically to your skin in the form of lotions or other skincare products, prebiotics can help to support the growth of your microbiome and offer a number of benefits for your skin.

Some prebiotic lotion benefits include improved skin hydration, reduced inflammation and increased protection against environmental stressors. Incorporating prebiotics into your skincare routine can help to nourish and support the health of your skin.

Check out our prebiotic hand lotions and body lotions to strengthen the microfauna of your skin and keep it soft, supple and lightly scented.

The Skin Benefits of Prebiotics

1. Reduced Inflammation and Irritation

Prebiotic lotion benefits, woman applying body lotion.

As prebiotics are known to reduce skin inflammation and irritation, they can be a highly beneficial addition to your skincare routine. This is mainly due to their ability to balance the gut microbiome, which can help to reduce systemic inflammation that can manifest on your skin.

What’s more, prebiotics also help to soothe and calm irritated skin, making them suitable for all sensitive skin types.

2. Improved Skin Barrier Function

Your skin barrier is responsible for protecting your skin from external stressors like pollution and bacteria, as well as maintaining hydration levels. Prebiotic products work to support the growth of healthy bacteria on your skin.

With a strengthened skin barrier, you’ll be able to enjoy a healthier, more hydrated skin that is better able to resist damage and aging.

Explore our prebiotic skincare products to heal and pamper your skin.

3. Decreased Acne and Breakouts

Prebiotic lotion benefits, woman applying face lotion.

Acne and breakouts are a common concern for many people. We all have different skin types, and depending on our daily routine, our skin is unknowingly exposed to harmful pollutants. This can cause your skin’s bad bacteria to multiply and imbalance your  good bacteria, which is one of the most common causes of acne.

Prebiotics can help to regulate the oil production of your skin, which can contribute to the reduction in acne and breakouts

4. Reduced Fine Lines and Wrinkles

While fine lines and wrinkles may be a natural part of our aging process, we can still take steps to minimise their appearance. Fortunately, prebiotic skincare products are known to have significant anti-aging effects on the skin.

This may be due to their ability to stimulate collagen production and improve skin elasticity, both of which are important for maintaining a youthful appearance. If you’re looking to give your skin a youthful glow, a prebiotic lotion may be just what you need.

4 x Best Practices for Wearing Fragrances

Wearing fragrances is a poignant element of our personal expression and can be used to enhance one’s mood, confidence, and overall impression. However, wearing perfume can be tricky and it’s essential to know the best practices for getting the most out of your favourite scent.

From choosing the right fragrance to applying and layering it correctly, there are many factors to consider. Whether you’re a seasoned fragrance enthusiast or just getting started, you need to understand the art of wearing fragrances in order to make the most of your scent collection.

In this article, we’ll explore the best practices for wearing fragrances. Let’s begin.

1. Consider Your Body Chemistry

Choosing the right fragrance for your body chemistry is crucial for ensuring that the scent smells good on you and lasts throughout the day. Each person’s body chemistry is unique and can affect how a perfume smells on them. Factors such as skin type, diet, and hormones can all play a role in how a fragrance smells and how long it lasts.

To find the right fragrance for you, sample a few different scents on your skin and see how they react with your body chemistry. You should also keep in mind the time of day and the occasion for which you intend to wear the fragrance. Some aromas are better suited for evening wear while others are more appropriate for daytime use.

Additionally, pay attention to the fragrance notes and try to choose scents that complement your natural body odour. With a little experimentation, you’ll be able to find the perfumes that work best for you and make you feel confident and comfortable.

2. Correct Application for Maximum Longevity

Applying your perfume correctly is the key to making sure that it lasts throughout the day. That’s why it’s best to apply the fragrance to the pulse points of your body, such as the wrists, inner elbows, behind the ears, and the base of the neck. These areas generate heat, which helps to activate and release the aromas.

You should also apply the niche fragrance to clean, moisturised skin as it helps the scent to adhere better. If you have dry skin, your perfume is more likely to evaporate quickly. Try adding a dab of unscented body lotion or vaseline to your pulse points before spritzing your perfume. This will help to lock in the fragrance for a longer period of time.

Additionally, it’s a good practice to apply your perfume post-shower and wait a few minutes for the fragrance to dry before getting dressed. This will prevent the scent from being absorbed by your clothes, causing it to fade more quickly.

3. Layering Fragrances for a Unique Scent

Layering fragrances can be a fun and creative way to personalise your scent. It involves combining different fragrances to create a new and distinct scent. The key to layering fragrances is to choose scents that complement each other and have similar notes.

Layering a floral scent with a woodsy scent can create a harmonious balance, while layering a citrus scent with a spicy scent can create a more dynamic and contrasting aroma. Start with a light base, such as an eau de cologne or eau de toilette, and then layer a more concentrated scent, such as an eau de parfum, on top. The lighter fragrance acts as a canvas for the more concentrated scent and creates a complex and nuanced aroma.

Layering fragrances can also be done with other beauty products such as body lotions, shower gels, and hair mist. This helps to enhance the longevity and projection of the fragrance, and to make it more personal to you. Try experimenting to create a scent that is truly one-of-a-kind.

4. Appropriate Storage for Fragrances

Heat, light, and humidity can all affect a perfume, causing it to lose its scent, become less potent, or even spoil. To store fragrances properly, it’s best to keep them in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. A dresser drawer, closet, mini fridge or vanity are all great options.

You can also keep your perfumes in their original packaging or in a tightly sealed container to protect the fragrance from the elements and prevent it from evaporating. Avoid storing your fragrances near radiators, ovens, or even in a car, as the high temperatures can cause the aroma to deteriorate.

Make sure to keep them in an upright position, which will help to prevent leakage and will keep the spray nozzle from clogging. With proper storage, you can enjoy your favourite perfumes at their best, each time you use them.

4 x Tips for Choosing the Right Perfume for You

It’s not uncommon for a unique scent to trigger a long forgotten memory or association. That’s the beauty and power of fragrances.

When it comes to choosing your signature scent, it’s not as easy as looking at the shape and style of the perfume bottle, or reading online reviews. You need to pick a scent that will please your senses and suit your personality.

Whether you’re a perfume fanatic or you’re new to fragrances, choosing the right perfume can be a daunting and intimidating task. You need to understand the different fragrance notes and families, and find one that you’d like to be associated with.

A memorable scent will make people notice you as you enter or exit a room. This feat can be more easily achieved by picking a niche perfume, as they’re more unique when compared to other mass-produced fragrances.

At Pairfum, you can find a wide variety of exquisite fragrances as well as room sprays, diffusers, scented candles and much more. Our in-house perfumers are dedicated to creating a variety of unique and tasteful fragrances that can make you stand out from the crowd.

In this article, we’re going to provide you with some helpful tips for choosing the perfect perfume. Let’s get started.

1. Do Your Research

Don’t pick your perfume based on current trends and popularity. Take your time to learn more about your style and your tastes. Read up on your preferred fragrance families and notes, and find out the differences between them.

Gain a basic understanding of the various floral or fruity ingredients used in making the perfumes, and find a scent that you’d be comfortable wearing. The scents that you come in contact with on a daily basis can also be used as a starting point to help you get a hint of which key notes you’d like in your chosen fragrance.

2. Pay Attention to Notes

Perfume notes are the various scent layers that make up a fragrance. When choosing your perfect perfume, you need to pay close attention to the notes. Each perfume or cologne has a variety of notes, and these work in synergy to determine their overall scent. While some perfumes have floral or fruity notes, others may have spicy, woody or leather-based notes.

Before committing to a perfume, try to identify its base notes as that will typically last longer than the other notes. You could also choose your preferred notes based on when and where you’d like to wear it. For example, a sensual scent may be better suited for a night out, rather than an office space.

Check out our niche perfumes to find your unique fragrance notes.

3. Choose Your Preferred Concentration

There are four levels of concentration for perfumes. While the fragrances with higher concentrations offer powerful scents and are long lasting, they tend to be a bit more expensive. The perfumes with lower concentrations may not last as long, but they are fairly affordable and easier to find in stores.

The fragrance concentrations include parfum, eau de parfum, eau de toilette, and eau de cologne. Consider the event for which you intend on wearing the perfume and how long you want the scent to last. These factors can help you pick an appropriate perfume concentration.

Choosing perfumes, person spritzing a scent.

4. Sample Your Scents

Just because a scent smells good on one person, doesn’t necessarily mean that it’ll smell the same on another. Your environment, the time of the day, and your personal body chemistry play into how a fragrance smells on your skin. That’s why one of the most crucial parts of choosing perfumes is to try them on.

You can spray a small amount of the perfume on your wrist and allow the warmth of your skin to reveal the scent. You should also wait a few minutes after testing the scent as your skin’s natural hormones and pheromones can either diminish or enhance the fragrance. However, if you’re still unable to choose the perfect perfume, you could try layering various scents to build your unique fragrance.

Constructing Your Beauty Fridge: 5 Products That Should Be Refrigerated

Should you invest in a beauty fridge

Throughout 2022 and into 2023, beauty fridges have taken the world by storm. Many beauty influencers and gurus have shown support for the idea of storing beauty products in a fridge.

While it may sound odd, refrigerating your beauty products has multiple advantages. This is especially true for the hotter months, when your beauty, cosmetic and perfumery products are more likely to deteriorate in terms of quality and shelf life.

Advantages of a Beauty Fridge

Ideally, the average fridge temperature is said to range from around 3 – 5°C. When it comes to beauty products, they each have their own directions for storage. However, it is generally advised that you keep them away from extremely hot temperatures or direct sunlight.

A cosmetic fridge will help provide a cool temperature for your products year round, which will save them from degradation and keep their textures and formulas intact. Moreover, you will find that your products feel more refreshing and have an extended shelf life.

That said, some skincare products should be exclusively stored in a mini skin care fridge.

Now that you understand the benefits of refrigeration, you might wonder what you can put in your beauty fridge. Let’s explore some beauty products that do well when refrigerated.

5 Products That Belong in Your Beauty Fridge

Pairfum London Woman Skin Care Face Hand Beauty Fridge

1. Probiotic and Prebiotic Skincare

Prebiotic and probiotic skincare work as efficiently as they do due to one key ingredient: bacteria. These skincare products are specifically made to target specific skin issues and goals. They can significantly improve your skin’s surface protection by ensuring that your skin’s barrier is intact and healthy.

The microbes in these products can also deal with skin issues like acne and psoriasis. Besides that, these products also help you balance your skin’s microbiome. However, due to the presence of bacteria, these products need to be stored in a beauty fridge to retain their effectiveness.

To prevent bacteria and fungi from growing in your preservative-free skincare, it is also advisable to keep it as cool as possible.

2. Perfumes and Fragrances

While this may sound unusual, another product that you can store in your beauty fridge is perfume.

Many consumers are adopting the trend of storing perfume in a refrigerator. There is a reason for this: refrigerating your perfumes can considerably increase their shelf life.

Perfumes need to be stored in an ideal environment where it is cool, dark and dry. A beauty fridge provides this exact environment to keep your perfumes safe from degradation by keeping their ingredients fresh and the note as close as possible to the original profile when you bought it.

Moreover, it’s always more refreshing to apply some cool perfume on your skin, particularly on a hot day.

3. Facial Skincare Tools

There are plenty of skincare tools that complement different types of skincare routines. From a gua sha to a facial roller, every single skincare tool has its own benefits for the health of your skin. However, storing them in ideal conditions is crucial to avoid any deterioration in their quality.

Facial skincare tools are specifically designed to improve blood circulation, drain unwanted toxins and enhance the absorption of serums, moisturisers and face oils. They can also be used to depuff and cool the skin. If stored in a beauty fridge, these products remain cool and will help soothe your skin.

what to put in a beauty fridge, a woman with a sheet mask on

4. Sheet Masks

Sheet masks are a core product in the skincare industry as they are the “quick fix” for multiple skincare problems. Whether you want to treat acne, control oil and blackheads or simply revitalise your skin, there’s a sheet mask for everything. Sheet masks are predominantly made up of materials like cotton, cotton wool, bamboo pulp or coconut pulp.

In addition to that, they contain special serums, fruit secretions and other important nutrients that help your skin strengthen its barrier. Due to this, it is important to store sheet masks in a cool environment where these ingredients can remain potent. Refrigerating your sheet masks will give you a refreshing skin care experience, as well as increase the shelf life of your masks.

5. Eyeliners, Mascara, Serum, Oils & Make-up

Besides skincare products, your beauty fridge can also be a wonderful place to store your makeup products, serums & natural oils. This is especially true for products like eyeliners and mascara, which have thick consistencies and can be easily ruined if they are stored in a humid, hot area.

With ingredients like lanolin, castor oil and a variety of waxes and colours, these products need refrigeration to ensure that the chemicals in the formula don’t have a negative reaction over time. Cooling these products also helps you keep them fresh and intact so that your makeup look appears more defined.

For the exact same reasons, you should also keep your skin care serums, natural oils and make-up in a mini skin care fridge, as it prevents their exposure to heat, light and humidity.

Understanding Your Signature Scent: A Guide

When it comes to choosing a fragrance, it can be overwhelming to navigate the sea of options available. With so many different brands, perfumers, and scent families to choose from, how do you find a fragrance that resonates with you to become your signature scent?

Finding your signature scent is a personal and subjective process, and it can take some trial and error to find the perfect match. However, with a little bit of understanding and exploration, you can find a scent that speaks to you and reflects your unique style and personality. This process can also be a rewarding and self-expressive experience.

At Pairfum, our in-house perfumers are dedicated to creating an exquisite range of unique and breathtaking fragrances. Our niche perfumes are specially designed to make you stand out from the crowd.

What’s more, we provide a wide variety of room sprays, diffusers, skin care items, scented candles and much more. Whether you’re looking for a fragrance for daily wear or a special occasion, we’ve got everything you need!

In this article, we’ve listed a few factors to consider when understanding your signature scent. These can help you gain a better understanding of what goes into choosing a fragrance that feels authentic and uniquely you.

1. Personal Preference

Pairfum Eau De Parfum Bottle Woman Legs Ginger Elemi Vetiver Square Signature Scent

Firstly, consider which scents you enjoy wearing on a daily basis. Do you prefer floral, woody or citrus notes? Pay attention to the fragrance notes that you’re naturally drawn to, and consider incorporating them into your signature scent.

You could also keep a journal of the scents that you’ve worn and how they made you feel. This can help you determine your personal fragrance preferences and identify patterns in your choices.

2. Occasion

Eau De Parfum Person Reflection Cardamom Tonka White Oud Hat Signature Scent Occasion

Think about what type of event or setting you will be wearing the fragrance to. In case of a formal occasion, an elegant and sophisticated scent may be your ideal option. However, a casual outing might be better suited for a lighter, more playful fragrance.

This means that you’ll need to consider the atmosphere of the event and the impression that you want to make. When choosing a fragrance, be sure to pick one that fits the occasion and doesn’t seem out of place.

Check out our amazing boutique perfumes to find the right fragrance for each occasion.

3. Lifestyle

Your daily routine and hobbies can often influence your fragrance choices. For example, if you’re a fairly active person, you might prefer a fragrance with refreshing, invigorating notes. On the other hand, if you’ve got a laid-back lifestyle, you’re more likely to opt for a warmer, subtle and relaxing scent.

When looking for your signature scent, ensure that your chosen fragrance suits and complements your daily routine and personal style.

4. Skin chemistry

Signature Scent Skin Chemistry a scientist smelling a scent

Each fragrance interacts with your body’s natural oils and pH levels in different ways. This means that a scent that smells amazing on someone else might not have the same effect on you. In this case, the most helpful solution is to test out various fragrances and see how they wear on your skin before committing to a signature scent.

Occasionally, people find that certain fragrance notes, particularly in high street brands, tend to irritate their skin or cause headaches, so it’s important to pay attention to how your skin reacts to different scents.

With our perfume experience box, you can sample a variety of fragrances to find your signature scent.

5. Season

It wouldn’t be uncommon for your fragrance preferences to change with the seasons. During the warmer months, you might prefer a lighter, more refreshing perfume that can soothe your senses. You might also need a scent that lasts longer, especially if you intend to spend more time outdoors in the summer heat.

However, during the cooler months, you might opt for something warmer and more comforting, or a scent that can enhance your holiday mood. There’s nothing wrong with having different signature fragrances for different seasons. It can be fun to mix things up and try out new scents as the weather changes.

3 Reasons You Need a Mini Fridge for Perfume Storage

What do you normally store in your fridge? We bet it is just your regular dairy or food items, like milk, eggs, meats, vegetables and much more.

It may sound unusual but many perfume enthusiasts, e.g. parfumistas, fragheads, … have been promoting the trend of storing fragrances inside a mini fridge. There has been a lot of debate about whether or not it is safe to store your perfumes inside a fridge. We wanted to shed some light on why this is the ideal perfume storage option.

When it comes to fragrances, toilet waters, after shaves, eau de parfums and colognes, they all contain a high level of alcohol and between 50-200 different fragrance ingredients. The fragrance ingredients can be natural (e.g. essential oils), nature-identical or synthetic but each has specific storage instructions that are unique to it with regards to:

  • temperature,
  • light,
  • oxygen
  • humidity,
  • … and more

Just like you and many beauticians and make-up artists may store their skincare, beauty and make-up products in a mini fridge (also called beauty or make-up fridge), you will be able to maximise the lifespan of your perfumes if you keep them refrigerated.

Let’s explore the reasons why you should consider a mini fridge for perfume storage.

3 Reasons to Invest in a Mini Fridge for Perfumes Storage

1. Cooling Slows Down Perfume Ingredient Degradation

It is well established fact amongst perfumers and cosmetic scientist that heat accelerates ageing of their precious ingredients, whist cooling does the opposite. However, cooling taken to its extreme, i.e. the freezing of ingredients, may destroy their integrity. In other words, gentle cooling that you typically find in a household fridge is optimal.

When you purchase a perfume or fragrance, it starts to degrade the moment you open the box and expose the flacon to the elements: light, heat, oxygen, humidity. From the minute you purchase your perfume, take it out of the box and place it in your bed-or bathroom this process of perfume degradation begins.

Once the perfume is exposed to the outside environment, each individual ingredient within the perfume start to react with the elements in the outside environment and this causes degradation. You cannot stop or prevent this from happening, which is why we always recommend that you should use & enjoy your perfume, as it will not last forever. You can, however, slow down this ageing process by storing the perfume in a cool environment.

Few of us like, however, to keep their perfume (or beauty, make-up or skin care products) next to their food items, particularly food items that make take on the odour of your perfume, e.g. milk, bread, …

This is why it is beneficial to use a mini fridge for perfume storage. A mini fridge will provide a cool, dark environment, allowing the perfume to maintain its integral properties and stay fresh for longer.

Also, it is much more practical to keep a mini beauty fridge in your bath- or bedroom rather than having to go to the kitchen to apply your fragrance when getting dressed.

2. Perfumes Storage In A Dark Space

The case that your perfume comes in serves an important additional purpose. Obviously, the packaging is designed to present your perfume beautifully.

It provides, however, a most important secondary benefit by keeping the perfume bottle away from light. To some extend it also protects it the extremes of heat or cold but only for a short while, for example the time it takes you bring the perfume home in the heat of the midday sun or the freezing cold of shopping before Christmas.

Perfumes are made up of different ingredients, which can be chemical or natural. Some of these are flowers, spices, roots, herbs, citrus types but there are many more. Some of these react very sensitively to sunlight, such as spices, some flowers and vanilla.

If you want to maximise the time your favourite perfume and cologne keep their ideal olfactory profile, there are some some simple precautions that we recommend you keep in mind.

This is why it is so important to store your perfume the right way. One thing to keep in mind is that your perfumes need to be kept in a dark and dry place to protect it from its main aggressors, which are light, oxygen and humidity.

Moreover, perfumes are also required to be stored in a cool place. A sunny place, like your windowsill or a cabinet near a heater, will quickly destroy your perfume. A fridge, however, ensures that your perfume stays away from heat, light and humidity, which makes it an excellent option for perfume storage.

Additionally, if you store your perfumes in your bathroom, you need to stop immediately. It may be more logical, as you’re likely to get dressed for the day in the bathroom, but it is not ideal for perfume. There are changes in the bathroom temperature multiple times a day, for example, when you take a shower. It is also wet and humid for the most part, which causes perfume degradation.

3. Increases Shelf Life

All types of perfumes have a lifespan. No matter what fragrance you are using, it will have a lifespan of about two to three years, depending on its composition. Usually, synthetic perfume ingredients tend to have a longer shelf life and fragrances with natural ingredients require more protection.

Clean fragrances and formulations have shorter shelf lives as they are made without the use of stabilisers, preservatives or fragrance extenders. These fragrances might require additional care when it comes to perfume storage.

Refrigerating these types of perfumes can help extend their shelf life. Besides keeping their original olfactive profile, they will last as long on your skin, as when you bought them.

For example, you may find that where you have stored your perfume in a fridge that the note stays fresher for longer.

What Should I Look For When Buying Perfume?

Eau De Parfum Person Reflection Cardamom Tonka White Oud Hat What should I look for when buying perfume

This is the second post in our mini-series of “How To Choose A Beautiful Perfume As A Gift”.

Today’s post is about the question ‘What should I look for when buying perfume?’ and ‘How can I avoid mistakes?’

Mistakes To Avoid

As a perfumer, I get asked this question frequently and these are my top tips

Evaluate the perfume first on a smelling strip, both initially and after it has settled. Once you find that you love it, only then try it on your skin and ideally at home, amongst the scents within your home.

This prevents you buying a perfume that is completely different outside the perfumery and/or on your skin.

Simple Mistakes to avoid:

  • never touch your nose with the fragrant smelling strip or everything will smell like the perfume you now have sitting on your nose
  • never let the smelling strips touch each, or they will all smell the same. Instead, hold them in one hand spread out like a fan.
  • only let the charming shop assistants spray perfume on your skin, once you have selected the perfume after trialling it on a smelling strip

A Step-By-Step Guide:

  • When using a smelling strip, bend up the tip of the strip (it somewhat prevents the scents from mixing when you accidentally bunch the scent strips together and it also prevents the scented tip from touching a surface when you put it down)
  • Write down the name of the perfume to remember what you sprayed. It becomes confusing when you have multiple smelling strips.
  • Spray the bent up tip 2-3 x times, holding the strip away from any surfaces.
  • Now smell the strip but not too deeply, as this will fatigue your nose. Smell lightly until you perceive the first notes and then take away the blotter and just ‘sense’ and enjoy the experience.
  • Can you recognise any ingredients? Your first impressions are typically the ‘top notes’.
  • Return later to the smelling strip and you will notice the fragrance gradually evolves to ‘heart’ and ‘base notes’.
  • Nasal fatigue sets in after about 3 x fragrances so take a break of 3 minutes, ideally away from the scented ‘cloud’ of the perfumery isle. It is scientifically proven that smelling coffee beans makes no difference.
  • Smell the perfumes again after 48 / 24 / 8 / 4 / 2 hours.
  • Pick the perfumes you love and wear them to fully experience the fragrance.

Online Shopping

Our Recommendation For Perfume Shopping Online

1. Make sure the company includes a free mini tester of the perfume you are buying so that you can try the perfume before you open the pack.

2. Does the retailer offer a free returns policy?

Once the perfume retailer offers both, shopping for perfume online becomes:

  • risk free, as you can return the scent easily, if it is not right (either for you or for the person you have gifted it to), and
  • superior to shopping instore, as you can extensively trial the perfume on your skin and surrounded by your own, familiar scents.

In this context, look out for ‘Experience Boxes’, ‘Fragrance Libraries’ or ‘Discovery Sets’. They are a great way to try new perfumes before you upgrade to a full-sized bottle.

Summing up, we hope these simple tips make a little easier to choose a wonderful perfume as a gift without the usual risks.

What Are The Different Types Of Perfume?

Eau De Parfum Person Reflection Bergamot Basil Patchouli Man Elbow different types of perfume

Today’s post is about the question ‘What are the different types of perfume?’

This is the first post in our mini-series on “How To Choose A Beautiful Fragrance As A Gift”.

When speaking about different ‘types’ of perfumes, this can be answered in many different ways.

Fragrance Oil Concentration

This question about ‘type’ refers to the concentration of fragrance oil within the perfume and we have the following types:

  • Parfum, Extrait
  • Eau de Parfum
  • Eau de Toilette
  • Eau de Cologne
  • Aftershave / Cologne
  • Eau Fraiche
  • Spritzer

We have detailed description of each of these different types of perfume on our website within ‘FAQs – which types of perfumes last the longest’:
https://www.pairfum.com/faqs-perfume-frequently-asked-questions/

Olfactive Profile or Category

We categorising fragrances by the fragrance type, the perfume industry has created ‘categories’ and these the main ones:

  • Oriental
  • Floral
  • Floriental
  • Fougere / Fern
  • Chypre
  • Aromatic
  • Woody
  • Citrus
  • Amber
  • Fruity

We have a more detailed description of each of these categories on our website, towards the bottom of this page under ‘classification’:
https://www.pairfum.com/perfume-description/

Gender

This split of fragrance types by gender is quite obvious and yet, the past 20-30 years have seen the rise of the ‘unisex’ perfume.

Today, it can be argued that these ‘types’ of perfumes are outdated, as modern women happily wear very masculine fragrances, as well as men wearing more feminine notes without hesitation.

Season / Occasion / Activity

Changing our perfume with the season / occasion / activity is still a quite modern phenomenon, as it requires that we have more than a single perfume. Many consumers now have a collection of perfumes from which the select according to:

  • the Season: fresh in Spring / Summer and warmer for Autumn / Winter
  • Activity: a light, invigorating note for a sporting activity but a unique/strong/long-lasting note for going to a party
  • Occasion: an elegant fragrance for going to the Opera or a more assertive / confident note for a business meeting

Formula

The perfume formula is another type of perfume and it has an enormous impact on how a fragrance smells.

Here are a few examples of different types of perfume formulas:

  • alcoholic: this is the most common one and the one everybody has grown to love. Alcohol provides a wonderful lift and freshness to perfume.
  • oil: perfumes with an oil base are typically found in a Parfum, Extrait or Attar. Without alcohol, they may seem ‘flat’ or not as strong initially. On the other hand, oil-based perfumes tend to last longer, as the alcohol doesn’t lift the perfume off your skin. This makes them very popular in high temperature countries, e.g. the Arabic countries.
  • solid perfume: perfumes presented in a solid wax are the most common type in this context. The olfactive profile of a fragrance will be similar to an oil based perfume
  • water: perfumes dissolved in water are typically associated with ‘Spritzers’. The main advantage is cost, as water is much cheaper than alcohol. One downside is that they can feel a little bit sticky or tacky because of the solubilizer needed to mix oil and water.

Format

When it comes to perfume types, today we also have a large variety of perfume formats:

  • perfume spray: the 100ml perfume spray is still the most popular type of perfume
  • size: we have seen the rise of the 30ml travel or trial size of perfume. These are not just ideal for holidays but also fit easily into handbags, pockets or sports bags for daily use.
  • perfume rollers: they tend to be popular for non-alcoholic perfume oils, as the allow precise application. Keep in mind, Perfume evaporates very differently from a wax than
  • perfume pen: this is a new format that competes with the roller but offers the benefit of the alcoholic perfume we love from the sprays.
  • solid perfume: these tend to be perfumed waxes, an another new format. Its robustness, i.e. it can’t break, and compactness, i.e. small flat tin, make it very popular as a travel, handbag or sporting accessory. The olfactive profile of a solid perfume is very different though.

Conclusion

As you can see there are many different types of perfume and each has its own strength or use.

The most common is still a typical perfume spray containing alcohol and yet, travel sizes, attars and solid perfumes have increased in popularity and are fantastic for specific uses.
